What becomes a legend?
Who would have thought that a man with a heritage so far removed from Latin America would become one of the world's leading cigar producers? You might say it could only happen in America, but Rocky's cigars have also enjoyed worldwide acclaim. Rocky Patel appeared on the premium handmade cigar scene at the height of the "Cigar Boom 90's" and has never looked back. Starting with a small boutique operation in Danli, Honduras, Rocky has had the good fortune to have worked with some of the best maestro tabaqueros in the business. Among the most recent of them is Amilcar Perez Castro, with whom he is now also producing cigars at his new Tabacalera Villa Cuba S.A. in Nicaragua.
Who is Amilcar Perez Castro?
Amilcar Perez Castro was born on February 1, 1973 in Baez Las Villas, Cuba. Hailing from an ancestry that has been growing and blending quality premium cigars for generations, after graduating from Cuba's "Export Tobacco" school, Amilcar landed his first job in the cigar business in 1991 working at the Felix Rodriguez cigar factory in Las Villas province of Cuba.
In 1997, Amilcar moved to Miami where he began working for a small factory on the famed "Calle Ocho" (8th Street). A year later, he was working at the El Credito factory, home to La Gloria Cubana cigars. During his tenure at El Credito, he worked in the aging and fermentation process, while also acting as a company representative at La Gloria Cubana cigar events across the country. He eventually moved to Santo Domingo in the Dominican Republic where he oversaw all quality control for El Credito's Dominican operations.
In 2008 Amilcar opened his own cigar factory in Esteli, Nicaragua. Among the first cigars he produced was the Rocky Patel "1961." The 1961 received a 91 "outstanding" rating from Cigar Insider and immediately became one of the best-selling cigars in the Rocky Patel portfolio. In 2009 Amilcar followed the 1961's success with the highly-acclaimed Rocky Patel 15th Anniversary edition.
Today, Amilcar is the exclusive maestro tabaquero for Rocky Patel Premium Cigar Company in a partnership that is expected to bring some exciting new premium cigars to the market in 2011.

Amilcar Perez Castro has been on our radar long before we entered into our current partnership with him. His knowledge and skill in cigar construction is second to none. Amilcar is not only a skilled buncher/roller, but he has a gift of being able to teach his skills to all the cigar rollers in his factory. The precision in his tubular bunching technique, coupled with his unique triple-cap process, produces a perfect cigar every time.
Moving forward, Amilcar Castro Perez will be developing cigars exclusively for the Rocky Patel Premium Cigar Company in a partnership that will launch several new premium cigar brands to the marketplace in 2011. I am excited about this partnership, and cigar enthusiasts around the world should be excited as well.
The blend for Signature by Rocky Patel was developed by Amilcar Perez Castro, who has made a name for himself as Rocky's "go-to" guy. A recipe of well-aged Nicaraguan longfillers and Mexican binder tobaccos are wrapped in dark, oily Habano capas. While decidedly full-strength, the smoke's initial payload of pepper and spice rounds out to reveal a smooth character loaded with dark, rich tobacco flavors, and balanced by subtle sweetness.
Amilcar Perez Castro cigars (APC) come by way of the man behind some of Rocky Patel's best cigars. Now you can enjoy these full-flavored cigars created by, as Rocky calls him, "The Master," in an affordably-priced, 3-shape edition handcrafted with Nicaraguan & Honduran longfillers and binders rolled in rich-tasting U.S. Broadleaf Maduro wrappers. The smoke is ultra-creamy with a base of earthy, woody and spicy flavors on a long, semi-sweet finish.
