Excalibur 1066 Cigars

I'm a Dark Knight!!!

I generally smoke mild cigars UNTIL NOW! This Full Body BOLD cigar is smoother than all of the mild cigars I've smoked. It held an ash the entire smoke!

Ummmm, never again

These made my hands smell like I rubbed them in fresh dog poop. Im glad the rest were stolen.

GREAT SMOKE!

I recently ordered a 5 pack of these excellent smokes and the day I smoked the last one I ordered a full box. Each of the 5 I smoked burned razor straight, filled my mouth with tons of smoke and tasted exquisite. At 3 bucks a stick (when ording a box) you can't beat this cigar for an "every day" or "go to" cigar. Highly recommend!

GREAT CIGAR

GREAT FULL BODY CIGAR, GREAT TASTE ONE OF FAVORITS

This review was written about Excalibur 1066 Dark Knight by RAY of CHICAGO on March 11, 2008

Enough oil in the wrapper to fry a chicken!!!

This really could be a great cigar with a little change in the wrapper. It starts very mild and builds in flavor but I can't get past the oily wrapper. It is so oily that you can smell the oil burning in it. This cigar produces a huge amount of smoke from the wrapper, not through the cigar. I took these out of the wrapper and let them set for a couple of months. Better, but still very oily. Unless you like the smell of a grease fire, you may not like this one.

One of the very best

This is in my opinion one of the very best cigars on the market . I had no trouble at all with the burn and draw. The taste was out of this world. One of the very best values for your money hands down. Thanks Famous for the great prices on this terrific smoke!

I don't get it

Nice enough looking cigar, but little or no taste. This came as a single from a shop with a big humi room, so I don't think condition is an issue.

Fine Smoke for Me and My Muse

Having recently finished the third and final novel in the January series, and lighting upon the concept for my next project, I decided to try a new cigar to kick off my first writing session. I’d sampled a number of Hoyo de Monterrey smokes over the years and have never been disappointed. Established by Jose Gener in 1867, this cigar factory, located in a valley in the Vuelta Abajo, is one of the oldest cigar brands of Cuba. The Excalibur Dark Knight, named after the legendary sword of King Arthur and the historic Battle of Hastings, is made with Honduran, Nicaraguan, and Dominican filler and a Connecticut Broadleaf binder elegantly wrapped in an aromatic extra dark and oily African Cameroon wrapper. It looks delicious and comes handsomely packaged in a cedar lined high gloss black box with brass hinges and clasp, and gold letters. Upon lighting, I was rewarded with great plumes of smoke and a spicy flavor that complimented my morning cup of coffee. My muse was much pleased, and so we set about the task of writing our prologue. A couple of hours later, our prologue complete and a good portion of chapter one on paper, the Excalibur, which had gone through a series of enticing transitions, none too strong or bitter, finished pleasantly on a cedary note, with me disappointed at having to let it go out. On a final note, The Robb Report recognized Excalibur as one of the world's five greatest cigars. Who am I to argue? Whether you’re a novice or an experienced cigar connoisseur, I highly recommend the Dark Knight.

It will be a sad day....

If Hoyo ever stops production of this line. Handsdown, this is my go-to cigar.. This is a very flavorful and smooth tasting cigar that looks amazing (very dark with tooth..) It produces a great smokey aroma that is very pleasant.. Reasonably priced for year long enjoyment too!

GREAT cigar weak wrapper and cap ...

This cigar has a great taste and burns good. The only SERIOUS problem is the weak cap/wrapper. The cigars start to fall apart half way through and that really weighs on the value of the cigar.

I?m very disappointed

A friend gave me a box of these as a present. (He did not get them from Famous the boob!) I tried one out of the box and it was very bitter and had no draw. I left them in the humidor for a month and tried one again. No change. It had an easier draw, but the flavor was even worse than I had remembered. I smoke quite a few cigars and enjoy the original Excalibur; however I am disappointed in the 1066.

Black Knight is it!

I feel that the taste is good in the start then to a spicy to bitter, although it is a dark cigar it is inconsistent to the burn. A comparrison is the ONXY Reserve Toro or the Romeo & Julieta(maduro)Reserve, those cigars are the two to compare and the C.A.O. Mx2 is another. Good cigar but no banana.

The Dark Knight is Quite a Delight!

This cigar was a wonderful smoke from start to finish. The taste was consistent, the smoke creamy and full, and the ash was firm and white. The only regret that I have is that I only picked up one stick (a whole box is on its way now!). I recommend this smoke to anyone who wants to add a flavorful, well-rounded, mild to medium-bodied smoke to their line-up.

KOTR

This was a great cigar, up until the halfway point. Smooth with a slight sweetness to the aftertaste, then once I hit halfway it turned bitter. First half was worth it though, will buy again.

This review was written about Excalibur 1066 Dark Knight by Gandalf of Portland on March 31, 2007

Problems

It's a nice cigar with a nice feel and taste, but everyone of these unravelled an inch or so into the smoke. The wrapper seemed to be extremely thin, and when lit, the filler expanded and cracked the wrapper until it fell off and the cigar was unsmokable. They were either rolled with inferior materials or shipped to me in an exceedingly dry condition.

Worthy

Re-visit to an old favorite. Some taste inconsistency, but very good impression overall. Rich flavor when right and burn fine. Definitely back in the rotation. Five star jaw breaking smoke. Recommended.

One of the Best Cigars I have smoked!

I have been smoking cigars for the better part of 30 years. I have tried them all, and this is one Great Cigar. One of my all time favorite smokes when I visit my local smoke shop, Emersons at Greenbrier in Chesapeake, Va. I Will recommend it to all my friends.

I Like 'em.......

I like this Merlin size of the Excal 1066. Easy draw, good flavor and a relatively quick smoke (20-30 minutes). Pick'em up!

Every gar has its' place

This is THE cigar you want when you are listening to your old Pat Boone 8-tracks. It's well-made, lights, burns, and draws well, produces a nice smoke volume, stays pretty cool, and has a taste so mild you cannot imagine how they decided to name it after the robust King Arthur. If you like a nice, well-built, easy, cigar that's so mild you could smoke it on a roller-coaster with an empty stomach - here Ya go.

THE BEST

The BEST cigar I've ever smoked. I got it in a sampler pak of 30 different cigars and it was still delicious, smooth, well burning, consistent thru the whole smoke, no bitter taste at the end. Very cool on the tongue because of its length and ring size. To me this is the perfect cigar.

The Things I've Read/Reviews

Well, I don't know what to say! I bought a box of these smokes when they first came out, and they have a great appearance with a nice toothy wrapper, and an excellent burn, along with an excellent draw. I never had any of the difficulties that have been described here!!

This review was written about Excalibur 1066 Dark Knight by Ed D. Harvey of Seattle, WA on April 23, 2005

Very Flavorfull

I tried the Merlin because I was curious to try a Hoyo de Monterey with a Cameroon wrapper. (I really enjoy the flavor of the regular Hoyos' with a natural wrapper) The wrappers are almost golden colored for cameroons, not dark and chocolatey like a Partagas. The feel of them is amazing, and if you look at them in morning sunlight, you can see the hairs on the leaf standing up, and intact.Very appealing. The draw was perfect for a cigar of this ring gauge. (I usually prefer coronas, for burn and draw.) The cigar stayed pefectly lit, and the flavor was smooth, medium bodied and balanced. Not at all sharp or bitter. This is a good alternative to Fuente. I enjoy Fuentes' but the wrappers are way too thin, and they are prone to shattering with slight provocation. Maduros are too thick skinned, which makes them always problematic to keep lit, as well as being bitter. This is a really good flavor for the price, and as far as all of the problems the other reviewers had with the Maduros, don't but them. Buy these beauties with a Cameroon wrapper instead. 4 out of 5.

Beautiful but rough taste

These are gorgeous, black, oily cigars. Well made and easy to smoke. My only complaint is that they taste kinda rough around the edges. Very full-bodied and robust, they need a few more months in the humidor to mellow and smooth out a little. After smoking a full box, I have not encountered the construction problems the other guys wrote about. If you can afford an extra $40 per box, buy Romeo y Julieta Reserve (Maduro) Robustos. If you can't, these are pretty good.

Good cigar if you unplug them

I just finished a box of these 1066 cigars and while I enjoyed their aroma and flavor I found them to have several problems. To get them to draw correctly I had to unplug every one of them and they also had a tendency to split eventhough I had aged them for over three months in the humidor. I will probably buy them again but believe that on a scale of 1 to 10 they only deserve an 8 rating.

TANTILIZING

THESE WONDERFUL CIGARS HAVE SUCH RICH QUALITIES, EVEN BURN, GREAT ASH AND A JOY TO SMOKE. THESE ARE VERY RELAXING SMOKES TO ENJOY! SIT ON THE DECK ENJOY SOME NICE WEATHER AND AN EXCALIBUR 1066

Good cigar but a lot of work.

I left this cigar in my humidor for about 2 months before trying one. This is one strong cigar that tastes pretty good. It has a great draw and gives you a ton of smoke, which I really like. However, every cigar in the box burned crooked (extremely crooked) and wanted to go out about halfway through. Smoking these cigars proved to be a lot of work. If you don't mind working at the cigar, then I recommend it. But if you want a relaxing experience, smoke something else.

Good Smoke

Beautiful Wrapper and extraodinary white ash. If you like Excaliburs - you might appreciate this smoke. It just doesn't quite have the flavor and after taste of the regular Excaliburs. I want to like it because it looks so good - but I would buy an Epicure before this one.

This review was written about Excalibur 1066 Merlin by Mike of California on August 9, 2003

Overall, the same as all Hoyo de Monterrey cigars

This line, not just the Merlin, is better constructed than the other Hoyo and Excalibur lines; but the tobacco is the same tasteless garbage at an unjustifiably inflated price.

Best Cigar for The Money

The Lancelot is quite simply, the best cigar there is for the money. Having been smoking Cubans recently, I took a Lancelot out of the humidor and half way through I couldn't help wondering why am I bothering on much more expensive cigars when this one is superior. Rich, coffee and expresso flavors perfectly balanced. There are some great cigars out there and this one is one of the best and it doesn't financially cripple you to buy a box.

A Cup of Espresso

This is one big powerful smoke! It's certainly a beautifully made and asthetically marvelous piece of work. Like a big red wine, this is going to need some time to mature I think. I gave mine a couple months in the humidor before trying them, but I think they will need about 6 months to come of their own. At first this is a big somewhat bitter smoke, but with hints of a very full complex flavor underneath. However the bitterness almost overpowers the richness. A wrestling match ensued. Which one of us was going to win? I gave it about 15 minutes and it really started to soften and allow the full richness to come through. By halfway, it was really a great smoke, complex and full bodied and a real mouthful. The ash was long, firm, a bit rough and almost black, indicating the possible need for more aging. The burn was extremely uneven, even with touching up. I had runners a half inch deep which continued to the end. I would guess with 6 months or more in a humidor, this will be a more balanced smoke and better from beginning to end.

Wonderful wrapper, solid construction and Flavor !

The Dark Knight has an exceptional wrapper, beautifully dark, with a oily sheen that leaves your fingertips feeling silky from just holding one of these cigars, try rubbing your fingertips together after handling one of these and you will feel what I mean. The Knight is solid, who ever heard of a soft-mushy knight anyway? The draw is good and the burn is acceptable, though I have experienced some uneven qualities. The taste....well, have you just finished a big dinner ? Or perhaps you are enjoying some fine liquer? That everyday smoke that you enjoyed so much after a light lunch this afternoon on the patio suddenly is like puffing on a piece of Melba toast? Maybe it's time to call in the Dark Knight, he'll save the day. Just don't give one to a Mac smoker, but if you do, take his car keys first

This review was written about Excalibur 1066 Dark Knight by Dennis of Omak, Washington on July 27, 2003

very impressive

I saw the advertisement for the Excalibur 1066 Dark Knight in an email. I decided to take a chance and now I have found my favorite cigar it s construction is excellent the burn was very even with a nice ash ,but the best part was the flavor of this cigar a times it was peppery and other times it was a cedary/leathery flavor at all times it was very smooth, just like a well aged scotch. Even my wife commented how good this cigar smelled It's definitely number one on my list

Great taste, great burn, nice construction

This was an excellent cigar. First the taste was great, for a dark cigar it was quite smooth. The burn was perfectly even and the construction was solid. Solid construction can mean that it was wrapped to tightly but this wasn’t the case in my opinion. Great cigar!

Who says the Dark Knight is always the bad guy...

Having smoked other Hoyo De Monterrey cigars, I bought a box sight unseen. This dark beauty has a peppery yet surprising smooth taste for a full cigar with a nice coffee like cedar aroma. The draw is excellent and it smoked consistently even with a nice long ash. If you enjoy Hoyo Sumatra this is a must try cigar!

This review was written about Excalibur 1066 Dark Knight by F. Sperring of Bay Shore, NY on June 16, 2003

Simply the best.

I like to try different cigars whenever I get a chance. I've smoked a few of the Hoyo dark sumatra's, and for the most part, I was not dissapointed. I am a maduro smoker, but I have recently developed a taste for cameroon. There was a box of Lancelot's in the same place that they usually keep the dark sumatra's, so I thought I might try one. This cigar look so well made, and smelled so good, I decided to save this one for a special occaision, so I picked the day we would first launch a missle into Bagdad. This cigar made a very tense situation a bit more bareable. After I found out exactly just who the missles were aimed at, I kicked back and enjoyed my cigar. This cigar may be among the finest in the world. Simply the best. God bless America!

Brilliant!!!!!!!!!

I have been smoking cigars for over 30 years and the first Premium cigar I smoked was the Excalibur #1 back in 76 or 77. It was excellent and it drew me into premium cigars. I tryed all different types after that to experience the wealth of the cigar world. I later had another in the early 80's and I must have gotten a hold of the odd bad one but I never returned to them untill recently. I, for a long time had been smoking mostly cubans untill I started to become dissatisfied with inconsitancy issues. Some of my all time favorites like The Cuban Hoyo Double Corona were not up to par. I returned to Dominican-Hondorun and Nicaragauian Cigars. One of the first I went back to was The #1 Excalibur. Utterly Fantastic and far superior to its Cuban Namesake currently; Belive me. Naturally when the 1066 hit the street I had to try the Lancelot. Brilliant!!! Tastes like or better then A Cuban Hoyo Double Corona in a great year! I don't have to explain the difference in price at between $70-75/box verses $290 (the price I would pay in Spain for The Hoyo Double-Corona. Everyone who smokes these is smoking the Best there is. I will always be in the search for a superior cigar at some future time, But for now, THIS IS IT! A solid 10

One Of The Best

Delicious! One of the best cigars out there, including Cubans. This bold, complex, mildly spicy and creamy smoke has absolutely no bitter aftertaste contrary to its almost desserty goodness. For such a large cigar, the Lancelot is well constructed with a surprisingly easy draw, too. A sexy Cameroon. I am impressed!

Biggest Bang for your Buck!!

I've been smoking cigars since 1967. This is far and away the best all-around cigar I've tried. Smooth, rich and tasty, it gives a fine presentation and aroma. It can hang with the expensive big boys and not bat an eye!

All the Excaliburs are the best

I have smoked cigars for about 25 years and to me the Excaliburs are the greatest smokes out there. Smooth, burns even, taste of cocoa and sometimes a little nutmeg(?). Good smoke anytime of day or night. HdM makes several other of the best too.

Another Great Excalibur

Hoyo De Monterrey Excalibur 1066 King Arthur is another great smoke from my favorite cigar company. (Ex #1/HdM DemmiTassi) I gave a few to my friends and on my next order to Famous Smokes’ they will be getting a box too. So will I! I love these wonderful cigars. Great taste, not too spicy or nutty. Full rich flavor with and a pleasant draw and a good burn. And they smell great. I have even had pedestrian’s comment about their pleasant aroma.

Great every day cigar.

I have to admit that the first one I took out of the box was a bit dry, but after that..wow! I have not been disappointed since. This is a great after dinner cigar. A spicy and robust and full flavor. I even caught a hint of cocoa on a couple of occasions. A firm yet smooth draw. I would recommend it to anyone that enjoys a full bodied cigar.

Top of the line for everyday price.

The Excalibur 1066 line is fantastic. The smoke is nutty, smooth, slightly spicey and rich. Out smokes and out tastes much more expensive cigars. I can't wait to get a whole box of these.

Tried one at the store and purchased a box. I've smoked 4 so far and they have not dissapointed. Perfect burn, long white solid ash and smooth flavors of lite nuts and sweet caramel. Smooth medium bodied finish down to the band.

Nice Stick

Contrary to some of the other reviews for the 1066, I'm enjoying them. I've only smoked 4 out of the box, but I give them a "thumbs up". Beautiful cigar, oily, nice burn and draw, good robust flavors. I'm going to let them age awhile, and maybe snag a box of the Lancelots or Galahads.

It was not what I had expected!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I'am a long time advocate of the excalibur # III(ESP.maduro). I had the chance to smoke the 1066 Merlin last week. It looked, smelled, and started off great, but unfortunately it was not rolled properly and I had to put it out only a third of the way into the cigar!! Not Typical of an EXCALIBUR! I will try it again, hoping for a better outcome!!

Nice construction, but over-priced and uninspiring

As a long-time Excalibur smoker, I'd expected something exceptional in this long-awaited offering from General Cigar. The Galahad is a handsome-looking cigar, medium-bodied with a smooth, easy draw. There's a pronounced bitterness after the mid-way point, and disagreeable aftertaste. Overall, a rather uninspired (and over-priced) smoke. and

A great offering. This is a very pleasing cigar, long the lines of the original Excalibur, but slightly more robust. Same high standards of construction. If you like the original, you will probably like the 1066.
