A New Worst Cigar!!!

These cigars will not draw. Don't waste your time. I could give a very entertaining negative review, but I don't want to waste my energy. If a friend tries to give you one, he's trying to tell you he doesn't want to be your friend. Famous should remove this product from their line.

Had to throw half the box away

I cannot write enough bad things about this cigar, and all of Hoyo cigars (the only exception being the Dark Sumatra, which is still a bit strong for my palate). I bought a single of these from my local shop and enjoyed it well enough; the taste is woody, even "sawdust"-y, but I enjoyed that, and dry. I bought a box. Worst cigar decision I ever made. The construction was terrible. Sticks would split on lighting. I could only smoke them about halfway, the taste was so bitter/bland. Also, during this time, I was getting spoiled on everything Rocky Patel, so the draw on these seemed to me simply terrible, like sucking on a straw. Forget it. I ended up throwing half the box away. Good riddance. Make room in my humi for more Rocky Patels. And the occasional 5-pack of Hoyo Dark Sumatras. Oh, and the smell these things put in my humi! I had to move them out to another, smaller one because their "spice" odor was getting into my other sticks and making them taste bitter, too. I've smoked other Hoyos, too, and have generally had the same experience: bad construction (splitting cigars), poor draw, bland/bitter taste. I can't understand how anyone can give these a high mark.

Best little smokes I've ever had

I've tried Excalibur, Matadors, Romeo y Julietta, Monte Cristo, don Lino Habanitos, Macaduro and Cohiba cigarillos, I can say with 100% certainty that Excalibur is THE BEST. Why? It doesn't stink like most other brands and the draw is consistently good. The one with worst draw is Cohiba. I felt like getting ripped off smoking that brand.

a swell find

I found this cigar to be quite the nice surprise, as I had previously sampled only the Merlin Excalibur, and I found this to be a superior cigar in my opinion. Easy draw, decent burn, and mild taste makes it an instant favorite for me.

Good not Great

This cigar is good for the price. It has a nice taste and an easy draw but I find that it does not burn evenly and goes out at least twice sometimes 3 times before I finish it. I will still purchase this cigar but will continue looking for that great cigar (price compatable of course).

I am glad the rating is low!!!

I have been smoking Cigars for 33 years. In the later part of the 1980s and early 1990's I tested nearly every Cigar on the Market. The Excalibur by far has the best overall flavor, aroma, comfort, finish , feel, burn and draw. The ash tells the story. The low rating keeps this as it always has been, the best Cigar value on the market. They are never on sale and never in full stock and in a box of 20 you will get at least get 18 100% smokes. Even good on a relight. I give it a 3!

A VERY fine smoke at a reasonable price

I happened onto these cigars when the local tobaconist was out of my regular fare. What a surprise. These may be the best in the Hoyo line. They look great, box pressed and oily, and have a pleasant pre-lit aroma. The draw is good when cut. The cigar starts out sweet with a good burn. Produces a thick and chewy smoke - very palatable. The middle third became slightly peppery, but returned to a fine finish with a milder sweetness. I've got a box en route and can't wait to enjoy these some more.

Good and Bad

I got some of these off of auction the other day and let them sit in my humidor for about a week. Pulled one out to enjoy last night and had mixed feelings. The taste and burn were great but the draw was extremely tight. I rolled and pressed and even bit down on the tip which helped a little bit but it was tight the entire cigar. Hopefully this was just a bad one. I'll update when I have a few more of the ones that I received.

Top quality, but a bit mild for my taste

I've found Hoyo de Monterrey to be one of the most reliable brands. The Epicure seems like a younger, milder version of the house Robusto, which I love, except the initial taste was jalapeno--a pleasant surprise--but this faded quickly. The complex, peanutty flavor, with floral and coffee undertones, dominated. The other qualities (draw, burn, etc.) were very good. I will probably smoke another, sometime, but I still prefer the fuller bodied Hoyo de Monterrey Robusto.

S-M-O-O-T-H

Got these based on the good rating in Cigar Aficionado and I'm glad I did. This is one of the smoothest cigar I've ever smoked. Beautiful construction and burn, sweet on the lips, and although the finish was a bit short, the overall experience was heavenly.

Great Golfing Cigar

FSS recommends these for the golf course and I can see why. They are nice tasting but not so complex that you will want to contemplate your cigar instead of concentrating on your swing. The construction is excellent and burns evenly with a nice, white ash. I find that it burns down relatively quickly, probably because being a lighter cigar, I draw deeper and more often. So, when I order a box, it will be the Churchill size.

An Hour of Bliss.

I wanted to broaden my horizons with a few new smokes so I picked up on one of those Famous Sampler packs. This Hoyo Excalibur was included and boy am I glad it was. The smoke intoxicatingly creamy & delicious with a hint of spice on the finish. I've had about 6 of these in the past year and they have all been fantastic. If you like a creamy smoke this Excalibur is the one.

Disapointed by comparison

On the same day I smoked this - Xmas Day - I also smoke a much better Perdomo Criollo and a Partagas Robusto.
With the Excaliber the wrapper was just too thin and peeled in pieces to spoil the rather boring smoke.

Does it get any better than this?

The first time I smoked this cigar from a sampler I thought "What a great cigar". So I ordered a box. Now I think this is the "greatest" cigar I`ve smoked so far. From the Padrons,Caos,Arturo's, Cohibas, etc., this baby wears the captain's hat for me! The taste and aroma are unsurpassed, and I can even smoke it next to my wife with positive comments!

Top Drawer Standard

About a year ago, this was the first cigar I tried that I considered top drawer. I enjoyed the bellows of aromatic smoke and heft of a manly cigar. This is full-bore maduro pleasure, and a lot better than the natural wrapper version. When I try a new cigar, I inevitably compare it to the standard of my top drawer first.

Strong,. a bit harsh, not to all tastes

Those, like me, expecting a pleasant mild cigarillo will be disappointed with these. Strong, not entirely pleasant taste (and nasty aftertaste) I don't much care for but which some may like. I started calling these "Excalibur by Jose' the Degenerate" but didn't dislike them enough to throw them out: I finished all 5 tins I bought, grumbling all the way through.

Great Mild Cigar

I got this as one of the cigars in the Famous Super Premium Sampler. It's been in the humidor for a couple of months and I got around to trying it today. I found it to be an incredibly tasty mild smoke.
It burned well, drew effortlessly and the ash was white and tight.

Deserves better review

About 6 months ago I compared this cigar to Fuente
858 and since then, things have changed. The Fuentes went down in flavor and the Excaliburs went up. This is a really good stick. The mellowness and flavor of chocolate and spice with a hint of vanilla has taken me by storm. I give this cigar a justified 9.5 across the board.

My favorite cigar to this date...

The Excalibur Epicure is extremely smooth and creamy. Not bitter nor harsh, burns well and finishes completely tasty. This is my favorite cigar and, up to this point, the best cigar I've had. I know everyone has different tastes in cigars, but you should try one of these beauties. The nice taste lingers in your mouth for hours after smoking. Ok, I'll stop now. Try one for yourself. I am buying some for my sister's wedding in July, but I may be stingy and not share.

Solid, mild & spicey, but bad finish

The Epicure starts mild with faint peppery taste, peppery taste builds a bit and then the filler flavor thickens until it is mostly just smokey and uninteresting, with no spice and nothing to replace it. Impeccable construction, perfect draw, excellent ash, beautiful solid cigar, no doubt. Not as strong as the Hoyo de Monterrey, but not very interesting after the first 1 ½ inch. I'm going back to Padron 3000. If you like the spicey flavor, try La Fontana Galileo, which finishes much better.

Disappointing

Had high expectations for this cigar and was disappointed. I left it in the humidor for 6 weeks at 70/70 before I decided to smoke it. Looked beautiful - nice dark oily wrapper. Fired it up, and the taste was OK at best. It burned a little after taking a hit - with a poor aftertaste. I took long breaks between drags hoping it would improve a bit - didn't change at all. It burned unevenly in the middle. The flavor improved a little at the last 25%. After that it burned hot and I had to put it out. I'll stick to Carlos Torano Reserva Selecta for Maduros. The Epicure Maduro was better than this one.

Fantastic!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I have been smoking cigars for over 30 years and the first Premium cigar I smoked was the Excalibur #1 back in 76 or 77. It was excellent and it drew me into premium cigars. I tryed all different types after that to experience the wealth of the cigar world. I later had another in the early 80's and I must have gotten a hold of the odd bad one but I never returned to them untill recently. I, for a long time had been smoking mostly cubans untill I started to become dissatisfied with inconsitancy issues. Some of my all time favorites like The Cuban Hoyo Double Corona were not up to par. I returned to Dominican-Hondorun and Nicaragauian Cigars. One of the first I went back to was The #1 Excalibur. Utterly Fantastic and far superior to its Cuban Namesake currently; Belive me. Brilliant!!! Tastes like or better then A Cuban Hoyo Double Corona in a great year! I don't have to explain the difference in price at between $70-75/box verses $290 (the price I would pay in Spain for The Hoyo Double-Corona. Everyone who smokes these is smoking the Best there is. I will always be in the search for a superior cigar at some future time, But for now, THIS IS IT! A solid 10

Don't buy these cigars - I want 'em all!

I scooped up a batch of singles here at Famous to try out - we have a winner here boys and girls! Scroll down and look at some of the other comments about these great cigars...I agree with them and add these personal notes: wonderfull flavor and feel in the puff (includes draw and smoke). I enjoy mild to very full smokes - like a good book, any topic is OK, it depends on how well its written. These are a masterpiece in medium...never harsh or hot...a pleasure to pick up tima and again...rich with your morning coffee or on a soggy winter stomp with an excited retreiver. They bring my bad days back around to all right and celebrate a good day with a satisfying "well done". I've got a humidor mixed with Hemingways and Fuente Don Carlos, Onyx Reserve, Mayorga, Partagas Blacks, Punch Gran Cru, Henry Clay, Hoyo de Monterey - all well thought of by me and many others as well - but these are my true friends..the ones I look forward to spending time with...so don't drive the price up by buying them in a frenzy. Leave some for me!

Burns Too Hot...

I had some of these a couple years ago and returned the box after two smokes. Thought I'd give 'em another try and bought a half dozen on sale here. Now I remember why I returned them in the first place. The cigar isn't put together right at all. It had a nice draw but really burned way too hot. The rim around the ash becomes black confirming that the tobacco either isn't cured or aged properly or the binder and wrapper aren't working together right. It is creamy tasting, but without much definition at all. Kinda like a batch of cookies made without salt. It's like it wants to be something but just can't get there. Which is what the cigar as a whole comes off like too.
