Trendy, Top-notch Collaboration

Most cigar lovers cringe at the mention of flavored cigars. Make no mistake about these; this is not cheap, acrid tobacco covered up with an air freshner-like scent. Rocky Patel and Drew Estates have teamed up to produce a premium cigar made with top notch tobacco expertly constructed with the same high standards and consistent quality you'd expect from all the RP lines.
The dark marbleized chocolate-colored wrapper is oily and slightly sticky to the touch. The slight blemishes and moderate veins on the wrapper give this cigar a particular character (no doubt intentional), but is beautifully constructed with a good cap. The dense and solid box-pressed shape gives it a good hefty feel in the hand. The pre-light draw was good. The wrapper left a pre-light impression on the lips too with a tantalizing taste of cocoa powder and brown sugar. The cigar lit up well with a decent draw. The smoke was pleasing and very aromatic, and the room quickly filled with the appetizing smell of freshly brewed mocha cappuchino. The actual taste was, however, more subdued and balanced (A hallmark of Drew Estates). Despite the sweetness of the chocolate and coffee infusion, the tobacco flavors also shined through creating a smooth, creamy mild smoke. The outer ash was medium-light grey but the filler tobaccos left a less pleasing dark ash. Long filler tobacco was no doubt used and the ash, accordingly, stayed a good 1.5in before breaking. The cigar burned good with minor problems along the boxed corners, the cigar however corrected itself well and no relighting was necessary. This smoke lasted a good 60min and did not get bitter till the last quarter of the cigar. This is a great smoke for even the most ardent cigar lovers who want to try something different, that's well made and constructed, but that isn't overwelmingly candy-like.

Drew Estates does it again!!

this oddly shaped pressed little beauty is a great stick. It is well constructed, good drawing, aromatic, handsome cigar. I was a bit aprehensive in purchasing this cigar being box pressed and all. My previous encounters with box pressed cigars were poor construction, and have generally poor draw. However Drew Estates has made a premium quality pressed cigar in the Java. This cigar burns evenly, cleanly, and the ash is solid. The Java Super58 toro has a mild chocolate and coffee hint which adds to the already great flavor of this cigar. By hint, i mean unless you were looking for it you would probably be guessing what that flavor was. The only drawback to this cigar is that unless you keep drawing, it tends to need to be relit(had to do this a couple of times cause i was preoccupied and wasn't paying attention to it. Other than that, i will be keeping plenty of these in my humi....definitly one of my new favorites.

Not Good At All

I am a little disappointed with this cigar. The wrapper is lightly sweetened but that goes away after about 15 minutes. The first 1/3rd of the cigar tasted decent but after that it started developing more of a "chemical or medicinal" flavor which turned me off quickly. I smoked up to the halfway point and I just couldnt do it anymore so I put it out. I recommend that you try a single cigar first before you buy a pack.

BURNS THE THROAT

I am a big fan of Drew Estates cigars, flavored-infused and non-flavored. I regularly smoke Acid Atom Maduros, Acid Blondies, Acid Cold Tea Infusions, Natural Dirt Torpedos, and Natural Elixers. I love the Kahlua! So I bought a 5-pack of the Java Corona Maduros based on my experience with Drew Estates and the 9.4 Java received here. I put them in the humidor for a couple of days and lit one tonight. The first 1/3 of the stick had nice hints of cocao and coffee with that good Nicaraguan filler finish. Then it started to become bitter. On the way down the second 1/2, the smoke began to burn the back of my mouth and I could not smoke any more. The finish now was all bitterness and I had to smoke a Blondie to get the taste out of my mouth. I'll leave the rest in the humidor for a couple of weeks to see it they mellow. If the next one is like this first, I will throw the rest away.

Coronas are better

Use a punch on one of these honkers as they are wrapped pretty loose. After lighting gave me an inch of firm ash and plenty of cool blue smoke with an almost too easy draw. Wrapper started unwinding a fourth of the way down and kept doing that without affecting an already even burn. Weird. Required two relights and upon second she went sour on me. Having said that it still had that fantastic JAVA taste up to that point. I've had much better luck with the JAVA coronas.

I do NOT like flavored cigars, but I like this!

The construction is excellent, the draw is nearly perfect, and the taste like chocolaty maduro. Drew Estate's Java (Blended by Rocky Patel) is one cigar that I do like by Drew Estates. I do not like the acid line at all, but give me a java any day!
I like the smaller ring guage in this cigar, if I get a large ring guage the flavor can be a bit much. This is one that I liked the flavor of, AND I had women approacing me asking what it was and giving compliments!.. BUT, Bottom line, THIS IS GOOD SMOKE!

tastes great, bad construction (just my box?)

I received my box order two days ago. Smoked two wafers, one last night, one tonight. I can't be certain if it's my box of wafers that's 'soggy', 'soft', or just badly made. It certainly felt different than the ones I saw at a local cigar shop. The ones I saw at the cigar shop were hard, and not soft and soggy like I described. Tastes great, though, and that's the important thing. Burns great, but the draw was hard towards the end.

Excellent

This cigar is well-made, with a nice draw, and although I was originally not too keen on the box shape...I'm now a convert. This cigar has the perfect balance of flavors. The coffee infusion is not overly done as is often the case with Kahlua cigars...but rather hinting at flavors in a much more subtle manner. Excellent cigar, goes particularly well with a nice cup of coffee. Highly recommended.

A fantastic smoke !!!

Being a fairly new cigar smoker I have been almost maniacal in my samplings of different cigars. Although I like regular cigars; I can appreciate flavored ones also. These are amazing. Great draw, very nice construction, and wonderful to look at. A mild taste of cocoa, a litte bit of coffee and an amazing aroma while mantaining a premium tobacco taste. Forget the samplers I'm buying boxes of the stuff!!!!

Not so good

Now something doesn't ring true here. When I opened the various cigars in the sampler, the smell that initially hit me was not coffee, but chocolate. I then passed the cigars under someone else's nose, and they concurred: chocolate.
Then came the smoking. Got to tell you, folks, the cigar tasted terrible. To best describe the taste would be to liken it to a chemical taste similar to moth balls. And, the after-bite was nearly acidic.
This does it for me for flavored cigars. I'm sticking with my Arturo Fuentes.

Think Twice First

I don't usually do flavored cigars, but I recently got a 5 pack of these mocha-flavored demons. First, build quality was bad with obvious breaks in the wrappers. Then the smoke had an unusual almost-undescribable bitter-metallic taste. I won't touch the remainder, and I wonder if I just got a bad batch. Reviews seem quite good, but I couldn't give these better than a 4 over-all rating. Sorry.

I love these smokes!

John, you can send them to me. Private mail me at madmerlyn at earthlink dot net for an address, and I'll send you a check for the shipping. That goes for anyone who doesn't like these!<br><br>
Or, you could try letting these sit for a while. They tend to need a bit more curing than some other premiums, but they truly shine when at optimal conditions. I have never experienced any chemical aftertastes with a Java, but it is possible you just got a bad stick.<br><br>
Strongly aromatic cigars are not for everyone, and <b>maybe</b> this is the reason for some negative responses. My normal experience with these (all sizes) is thick, creamy smoke, with a lot of chocolatey and coffee-like scents and flavors. Underlying the strong aromatics is a solid, pleasant mild to medium bodied tobacco. Wrappers tend to a dullish but moist appearance, and are not as prone to tearing as many other Drew Estates cigars. Finish is as good as the start (I often burn my fingers on these...).<br><br>
Overall, a fine smoke, by my account. Anyone not wanting theirs is invited to send them to me. :)
