La Gloria Cubana - DR Cigars

Good smoke at a very good price

Smoked a couple of these Wavells from a recent order, last night at a bar, and I would call them "good", not very good or excellent. Certainly pleasant enough, it has some flavor, a little nutty, medium-full, draws pretty well, very good construction. It's the kind of cigar to have when you're doing something, party or at a bar, but if you're having an after-dinner or quiet evening smoke, there are other & better cigars with more character and smoothness. I rate it a 7, similar to a basic Romeo Julietta, or H.Upmann.

fine after dinner cigar

La Gloria has made a nice blend of tobacco. Well handcrafted cigar.

They're ok

I was slightly disapointed with these little cigars. The draw was good however the taste was a bit sharper than I was expecting, and they also bit my tung. However they were not terrible for the price. I would give them a fife out of ten.

Not So Much

Purchased the Wavells and can't get enough of them, GREAT Product. Wanted to try the Corona Gorda and bought a box. Out of the 5 I've smoked, 3 have had wrappers split after I lit them. The draw was weak and difficult to keep going. Wish I could get a refund. Love the Wavells, the Gordas...not so much!

My experience has been uniformly good

I'm puzzled. The LGC Wavells (DR) seem to elicit diametrically opposing reviews from what I've found on the web. I've had three from a gift sampler my wife purchased late last year. I've found them to be a very, very pleasant, creamy medium-bodied smoke. They light easily, draw well and have a good, spicy (but still smooth), leathery savor that remains consistent for most of the burn. One of them seemed to lose ash faster than I'd have expected, but the other two were exemplary in that regard. Have I just been lucky, or is the simply a case of "different strokes for different folks"?

A fine cigar

This is a really fine smoke. Don't let the deep dark maduro wrapper scare you off if you're used to a mild smoke. This version delivers a rich, full bodied, nutty taste and is never harsh. Smokes great from the first puff to the last and ends very nicely. A well made stick that burns evenly and holds a long ash, however they will get bitter fast if you re-light again and again or if you try to rush it. Good with coffee or a nice brew, I usually save them for after dinner. I taste a bit of leather and coffee in the smoke and it's pretty complex. I prefer these to the La Gloria DR version which seems to have become inconsistent in construction and flavor.

JM's Taste Notes

1st 3rd - notes of spice, to me...almost curry or chili tasting, as well as earthiness, bold smoke. 2nd 3rd - spice/earthiness, boldness carries over but you start to tast hints of chocolate. Last 3rd, Chocolate notes are defined here. Try eating something milk chocolate after smoking!

So-So

I had one of these after dinner on a Saturday night. I had smoked a Sancho Panza Double Maduro earlier in the day. To be perfectly honest, I would have a very hard time telling the difference between the two as far as flavor goes. It was not a bad cigar by any means; it's just that it was surprisingly similar in taste to the lower priced cigar.

Wonderful, Rich Smoke

Like most LGC's I've smoked over the years, this dark beauty didn't disappoint. I solid medium-bodied, 1 1/2 hour smoke with outstanding aroma and flavor from beginning to end. These will only get better with age.

A Fine Medium Smoke

While I usually smoke full-flavored cigars, I appreciate a fine medium one now and then to reset my pallet. A few sticks had a tendency to canoe, but nothing uncontrollable if you pay attention. I found the draw and flavor to be exactly what I want in this category and will continue to buy these for myself and friends.

Great Smoke! No downside at all!

I keep comming back to these wonderful, medium strength beauties. They smoke with a nice draw, tasty aroma and flavour and are consistent box after box. The ECSU wrapper is smooth, spicy and leathery with no bite if you let them sit a week or two. The price is right and they are a perfect size for an easy 45-55 min smoke. I like them on par with a Punch Elite or a Puros Indios #4, both also great value smokes! Enjoy!

Nothing special

I liked the length, it's a long smoke, however the flavor was nothing special. Not too complex. I would catagorize this one as a "beginner". The experienced smoker may find this bland.

Getting worse by the year

I purchase this cigar regularly and they are getting worse. More than half in the last box were so tight that they were unsmokable. The burn is not consistent either. Very disappointing & time to change.

Great Taste, Less Than Optimal Construction

Now that I have smoked some Cuban cigars, I find some similarities with La Gloria Cubana. It has a peanut aroma that reminds me of the Cuban twang of a Monte #4. The flavor is superb and does not grow harsh, but as with my review of the Wavell, the cigar gave off a very loose ash that flaked all over and the burn was off. It also unravelled some, although this may have been due to dry winter conditions in my retailer's humidor. But I can live with these problems when the taste is as good as this.

Awesome

Just had one of these last night. I'm not a big Churchill or bigger size kind of guy because I usually don't have enough time to smoke a whole one. I made time last night now that the weather outside is getting nicer. It was definitely worth it. Nice and medium to full taste that at no time was overpowering. It was awesome with a glass of Shiraz.

Bold & Spicy

I have tried cubans, & in comparison these are right up there.....the flavor is excellent, lots of spice & very robust flavor. A great smoke overall. A medium to full bodied smoke in my opinion, that would definitely appeal to the palate of an experienced smoker that enjoys the taste of a full bodied cigar.

Tasted good but burned strangely

Smoked one in the car on a cold winter day. Was flavorful enough but put out tons of smoke continously, like it was on fast idle. The ash was quite loose and flaked onto my jacket. I guess it is a better smoke for out-of-doors for these reasons.

This review was written about La Gloria Cubana Wavell 5 Pack by Gregg of Concord, NH on January 24, 2007

have been better

I don't know why, but of late the quality of the La Gloria cigars seems to be in need of revamping. I have smoked these cigars for awhile now, seems the taste and construction has given way to production increase, and not for the quality we used to enjoy. Too bad, they used to be real Quality.

Nice Taste, Odd Burn

Great medium taste with lots of smoke. Draw was a bit quick, but this was probably related to the fact that it cannoed. I'll definately try another in hopes that it burns better/slower.

An immensely rich and full tasting cigar, great!

The whole La Gloria line is top shelf product at bargain basement prices. The Charlemagne by the box comes to $3.28 per stick...excellent value! I'm never disappointed by this cigar, consistantly great everytime. When I cut the cap and put it in my mouth for pre-light, it is a wonderful experience that always satisfies. From the first puff of savory smoke, you will instanly be in a better place. Just be sure to pencil in a couple of hours for this baby, because she's a long smoke. Enjoy!

Good Cigar

Got a sampler pack with 8 of these in them, good, smooth cigar. Nothing really special about it, but a good smoke nonetheless. Every cigar doesn't have to be the best you've ever smoked. I'd buy a box of these anytime.

This review was written about La Gloria Cubana (DR) Wavell by Fetterman of CO on September 20, 2006

Each to their own

Small but flavorful and rich smoke. Different in taste to me from the regular LGC line- probably due to the form/size. Despite small size it always was a long smoke for me. Obvious that this one must be a matter of opinion (read prior reviews), but a recommend from me.

I really enjoy the LGC Wavell. Its a very good and flavorful smoke, that lasts almost to the ring. Added Bonus: Nice every day smoke price!

Not a bad cigar

In my other review of these cigars I had recieved a bad box of cigars, but thanks to the owner of Famous, and Ernest Perez-Carillo I was sent another box for free of charge. I recently sat down with a cigar from the new box... The new cigars had the signature LGC taste and they burned evenly, they were just as good as all of the other LGC from the Dominican Republic that I have ever tried, the only thing is that the Hermosos are a tad harsher than the others but it hadn't spent much time in the humidor as the others. Every one has their favorite line of cigars, and these are mine. LGCs have a spicy robust flavor that's not overly complex but enough to keep my attention, not to mention their excellent customer service. I would like to thank the owner of Famous for his concern over my review, and Ernesto Perez-Carillo for his prompt response.

Not up to par

I first started smoking cigars about six months ago, and I quikly found that I like the LGC maduros, I tried the reseve figurados(probrably their best), the serie R, the churchill, the petites(my daily smoke) and the gloria. They were all good, so when I saw the hermosos on sale for 64$ a box I said why not, aren't all sizes in a line of cigars created equal? Well they arrived at my house and I tried one... well I couldn't even make it past the first fourth of the cigar(unusual considering every other LGC I have ever smoked I smoked to the nub). I thought well maybe they need time in the humidor, so two months later I try another one that is properly humidified, well no luck again. I tried about six altogether and cannot make it past the halfway point on any of them, they draw and burn fine but they taste horrible. Moral of the story, not every cigar size in a cigar line is created equal, maybe they had inexperienced rollers making the hermosos, who knows, but try a couple of singles befor buying a box if you don't want to throw your money down the toilet.

Found a little canoeing

While these cigars have an abundance of flavor, I found that there is a tendency of un-even burning. One must ignite the larger ringed puros with extreme care in order to avoid this. With this in mind, the cigar is of very good value.

This review was written about La Gloria Cubana (DR) Inmensa by L. Cohen of Miami on October 20, 2005

Not Bad...

The Corona Gorda is a relatively medium bodied cigar that has a very peppery, almost Jalopeno, character with the initial light-up that mellows out quickly to a floral foundation laced with flavors of cream, leather, coffe earth and spice. It has a very loose draw with mouthfuls of smoke and hints of orange peel. The finish was short and clean with hints of cream, leather and earth. A nice mellow smoke leaving a bit of a zing and an intoxicating after effect that was most displeasing. I prefer something with a tighter draw and a little more strength and body and doesn't leave me feeling loaded, but this isn't bad.

I LOVE THIS CIGAR!!!

Sheer enjoyment, I just love these! Perfect fit in the hand, smooth warm shiney wrapper, and it really smells like a winner. Toast up the foot, mmm boy, smooth with a nice dash of spice. Burns razor sharp right down to the nub even before you realize your fingers are getting blistered! If you haven't tried one yet, DO IT! You won't be sorry

Lack of El Credito

La Gloria Glorias Petit is not as advertised. Although the tobacco is DR, it is made, who knows where and not very well. I would not reccomend these to anyone. That said the Serie R #5 Cannot be beat for a consistantly superior smoke on all accounts.

FAVORITE EVERYDAY SMOKE!!!

THIS IS A GREAT CIGAR. THE TASTE IS GREAT, THE PRICE IS GREAT, YOU CAN'T BEAT IT FOR AN EVERYDAY SMOKE. I BUY THESE BY 2 OR 3 BOXES AT A TIME. VERY CONSISTENT, NEVER BEEN DISAPPOINTED WITH ONE YET.

Great then, inconsistant now...

This was a great brand in the 90's. It is full of disappointment today. And what a variety of disappointing characteristics is available! Both the maduros and the naturals fluctuate from lot to lot so much, every new box is a surprise, and about 7 times out of 10 it is an unpleasant surpise. And so many of them are so tightly rolled, or plugged, I've thrown entire boxes out. Aging doesn't help these cigars the way it used to, either. I've been buying them for years with the hope that I would find a box that tasted like the old days. And Miami made or Dominican doesn't make a difference, neither does size. Most of them are bad, some are very bad, some are tolerable, none are great. And they used to be great!!!

Very tasty full flavored cigar. The wrapper is a deep chocolate, very good. Smokes beautifully. I prefer the Wavell over the Glorias extra.

This is a relatively mild, smooth smoke. Even burning and drawing. Definately adding to the top of my favorites list.

Not a favorite, by any means

I bought a box of these hummers thinking they'd have to be similar to some excellent full-size La Glorias. Except for the nice dark wrapper, they weren't. My box was harsh, lacked any subtlety in it's aromas, tasted about like a machine-made Topper Grande Corona. On the plus side, they seemed to be pretty uniformly made, reasonably tight while still drawing and burning well, and to have a substantial nicotine content. Overall, though, what a disappointment. To me, this box contained what were roughly "mowing-the-lawn" cigars. And I've bought much tastier, more pleasingly aromatic cigars at my local drug store.

This review was written about La Gloria Cubana (DR) Wavell by John Green of Massachusetts on November 25, 2003

genuine premium

this is a beautiful smoke. my two favourite brands are punch and la gloria and this gorda is a good example why. Every cigar in the box perfect. All the same, great draw, delicious taste, superior construction. At 73 bucks a box a tremendous value! I have been smoking cigars for about 8 years now and i have spent way more money than i should have over the years trying to find a really good consistent cigar that was somewhat affordable. I have tried all kinds of cubans and i have to say that not only these gordas but allmost all of la gloria cigars are as good as it gets.

Great Draw and Great Construction. A little strong for my taste. I would buy again for a good deal. Draw reminds me of a Diamond Crown - but taste is strong.

A great cigar. We compare them to the Dom. Cohibas

Several of my buddies smoke cigars and are always looking for something new and great. This is one of them! We agree it tastes, burns and is flavorably consistent with the Dominican Cohiba's. Fcatiii

All the LGC taste in a tiny package

I have to tell you that I am an ardent fan of La Gloria Cubana. The Wavell and the #1 torp are two of my "on hand" cigars. I was a bit skeptical at the size of the Hermosa at first, but after smoking a few of these, I am impressed. It has all the robust flavor of the La Gloria line in a short compact smoke. They are perfect for my commute to work with a good cup of coffee.

Good flavor, but....

This used to be one of my favorite smokes. But I do not believe I will be buying anymore of them. The last box was simply unsatisfactory. As I got to the last 3 inches or so, it simply started to fall apart, unravel. So, suffice it to say, I would lose a significant amount of cigar each time. For the money, I would have hoped the cigars would be a bit better is all.

Great Cigar! Even better Price!

The cigar looked very nice and gave the appearance that the construction was good to excellent. They appeared to already have a bit of age on them (at least based on what other people use to judge by) the cellophane was slightly yellow. I brought them home and threw them in my humidor to age them a bit. Well, I got impatient and since I had never had one decided tonight was the perfect opportunity, given that my wife is out of town on a business trip in Chicago. I accompanied the cigar with a Cafe Latte from a local coffe shop, nothing special, but it was the first time I have drank coffe with a cigar and I have to say I REALLY enjoyed it. Definately will have to try that more often. Anyway, When I removed the band I noticed a small flaw in the construction, a hole. Oh well, I proceeded to cut the cap which was very nicely done. It cut smoother than most others. Could be that I just sharpened my cutter! This cigar was easy to light and took off like a champ. At first I was using my finger to cover the hole, which turned out to be quite distracting. So, I took a small piece of the cap and covered it with that. BTW, anyone know the recipe for vegetable glue? I used spit and it worked OK but took several rewettings throughout the smoke. Not something I would cherish doing in public! The ash was firm and white for the first half of the cigar darkening during the second half. The construction turned out to be pretty good. I noticed the binding and filler were rolled slightly tighter to one side of the cigar causing some uneveness for the first half but nothing major. This cleared up nicely during the last half of the cigar. The flavor was medium the first half being milder, as most of my experiences have been, with the last half showing much more flavor. I smoked this guy to the last inch and enjoyed it very much. It was a quick cigar for it's size, about an hour and 15 minutes. I tend to be able to smoke a roBUSTo for an hour so, this seemed a little quick. All in all a very enjoyable smoke even with the minor construction issues. I am hoping the second one is made a little better. I will let it age a while. For ~$3 a stick this will definately be a regular in my humidor.

I love these cigars!

I love these cigars! I've smoked several boxes of LGC maduros (churchill and similar) and I love them better every time. I actually LOOK FORWARD to lighting one. I smoke cigars all time, and most I chop off the end and light up without thinking much about it. La Gloria Cubanas I actually anticipate smoking just like I anticipate eating the lasagna my wife has in the oven. They're great! The thing has a soft leathery feel, the end cuts off clean, the burn is flawless, the draw is wonderful and consistent and the flavor is terrific. On top of all this, they are less than $100 per box! God was having a good day when he made these cigars!

La Gloria Big Smokes - Soberano- The BEST!

Ken Fitzsimmons (blueskyes@attglobal.net ), Flemington, NJ, March 3, 2001 La Gloria out does Itself !! I have been an avid cigar smoker since 1994, when I brought Rush Limbaugh a box of Hoyo De Monterrey Double Coronas from St. Maarten. I had no idea what I had given Rush as I had not smoked cigars seriously. But, the $ 240 worth of cigars was worth the opportunity to meet Rush on his TV show. Shortly after delivering the Hoyo Doubles to Rush, I began my education on Dominican Cigars with the Help of LJ Cigars in North Plam Beach, FL. I began with Partagas, Macanudo and other popular brands from General and Consolidated Cigar companies. In 1995 I met an individual in a cigar store in Bermuda and he told me about La Gloria Cubana. I did a favor for this cigar friend and brought back several boxes of cuban cigars from Bermuda on a coprorate jet I was traveling on. This friend gave me about 10 different La Glorias when I delivered the cubans to his home. I was thrilled to taste these La Glorias. Without a doubt, the BEST dominican I had smoked to date. I was traveling to Palm Beach weekly and made it a point to drive round trip to Miami to buy these wonderful cigars on South West 8th Street. I was able to open a private account back then during the shortage and purchased many bundles of La Gloria Churchills, Corona Gorda, Double Coronas, Soberanos, Charlamagnes, Wavells and Crown Imperials. I bet I have accumulated a pile of boxes of the La Gloria Line 10 feet high. These fine cigars will hold "their own" against any cuban smoke that I bring home on a regular basis. The quality of construction, color, shape, draw, flavor is sec ond to none. I have personally felt that the more experienced rollers were located in Miami verss the newest facilty that Ernesto opened in the Dominican. Whenever I have purchased these at J&R I have looked for the "FL" indication on the box to know that I am getting the Miami grade. I have heard thoughts from others, but early in the Dominican 16,000 square foot expansion, I believe I was correct in the fact that the better rollers remained on SW 8th St. in Miami. I have drank espresso with several rollers and Ernesto in Miami. What a real nice guy. He used to tell me that he was so upset to see what some of the retailers were charging for his cigars during the shortage, in some cases $ 18.00 for a torpedo or Soberano. His goal was to make a quality cigar that people could afford. Recently, I had the opportunity to smoke a Serie R made in the Dominican by La Gloria. What a wonderful Smoke! Excellent, every aspect of it. I am sorry that I didn't but all six boxes that Shannon told me that Famous had in stock. Absolutely Wonderful Cigar and beautifully packaged, deserved of such a well constructed cigar! Whether you smoke a Serie R or any of the La Gloria line, you WILL not be disappointed. A standard of excellence. Ernesto, thanks for setting such quality in the cigar industry these years. A true standard bearer. Ken Fitzsimmons This review was written about La Gloria Serie R #6

A standard of excellence. Ernesto, thanks for setting such quality in the cigar industry these years. A true standard bearer. Ken Fitzsimmons This review was written about La Gloria Serie R #6

One fine Maduro!

I am new to the La Gloria Cubana line but was genuinely surprised at the strong but smooth taste of this Maduro. High recommended to those looking for a medium to full taste Maduro.

I almost burned my fingers! OUCH!!!

This is one awesome cigar! I loved every bit of smoke of it! It had a great cedary flavour that was unsurpassed and incredibly wonderful! One other thing is the price, very affordable and even less expensive that the really high priced cigars! I couldn't let it down. But, I had to, was burnin' my fingers. It's a smoke that everyone, especially those who love pyramids/torpedoes. I rank it a perfect 100!

Can't go wrong

The La Gloria brand of cigars smoke anywhere from incredable in taste, construction, and burn to never worse than damn good. Never hesitate to recommend them to strangers.

Strong, but lighter than it looks; smooth draw

This cigar lived up to my exectations; it's full- bodied but not as strong as the almost black wrapper makes it look. I use it for an "in-betweener", a sort of daily/utility smoke, not my preferred Henry Clay. It very nicely fills up my one-hour commute to work, and maybe a second one, or my preferred, for the trip home. Having a good, even burn from solid construction, my only complaint is that it tends to get very strong on the re-light, and sometimes at the last inch-and- a-half or so even on first smoke. That's to be expected with most cigars though, especially full- bodied ones; but this one steps it up a little more than most. Also, the cut tip doesn't chew all that well . . . Famous' special of $50 a box of 25, which with S&H came out to about $2.18 a stick, was a bargain. Even though I prefer medium-to-full-bodied smokes, I'm wondering how the natural version of this one would be? It's a good cigar.
