Montecristo Cigars

Certainly good but overpriced

I smoked a Monte #2 last night that I'd been saving for a special occasion. To my taste, it was nearly identical to the RyJ Habana Reserve torpedoes. The RyJs happen to be my favorite cigar as of right now, so the Monte was a good smoke, but I expected more given how much these go for. I suspect that if I had had the Monte first the RyJ just wouldn't live up to it, so thank God I'm cheap.

Despite the listed naysayers this cigar is a 9.6

The absolute epitome of a great tasting medium strength cigar. ABSOLUTELY DELICIOUS!

Disappointed

This was my favorite cigar. Now they have cut it doen to 4 1/4", but still call it a 5" cigar. It's not worth the price

Stopped smoking after one-half inch

I paid $12 for a stick at a store because I had heard and read so much about the famous Montecristo #2, how smooth and mellow it was, how tasty it was. Wow, was I disappointed! No smoothness, no creaminess. Instead, bad (read: difficult, tight) draw, strong peppery aftertaste, spongy construction. After one-half inch I was fed up, put the stick down, and bought myself a Rocky Patel Olde World Reserve to get the bad taste of the Montecristo #2 off my palate. Rocky does not disappoint. The nastiness of the Montecristo #2 was soon just melting away as I was really enjoying the flavors of the RP Olde World Reserve.

Total Disappointment

One of the harshest...most unflavorable cigars I have ever smoked - if they were free I would pass.

not what i wanted and not a good cigar

Not what I expected.

I recently bought a big bundle of many different brands and about 5 different tins of cigars. (Cohiba, A Fuente, CAO, Ashton, and Monty,) To me the montecristo's were the worst. Out of the 3 I smoked they were very hard to draw, looked rugged, and tasted fowl.

This review was written about Montecristo Habanitos (8) by Calebd of USA on January 25, 2008

I would not buy these cigars for myself.

Very disappointing, not a very good cigar, not for the price. Kind of bitter, does not smoke well, leaves a bad taste after somkeing. Way, way over rated. I'll stick with the Onyx or Sancho Panzas.

Disappointment

I'm a Montecristo fan but these Discovery Edition #3's are awful tasting.I bought them because they said they were aged longer and therefore would taste better than the normal #3's, not so, these taste like they need to aged longer they have a strange bitter taste. I've taken them all out of the tubes and have stored them in a spare humidor, hopefully in a year they will be smokable.

Flawless and a legend

I had to try one of these after hearing so many good things about them. I was not let down. It was exquisite to say the least. Its everything you can want in a cigar, and even some you didnt know existed. Excellent craftsmanship, the build on it was perfect. It smoked smooth, consistent and held a beautiful ash. Teaming with flavors that changed throughout the entire cigar. This is a must smoke regardless of whether you are a beginner or a lifelong cigar lover. You will never regret picking this cigar from the humidor to smoke. Ever!

Not up to Montecrsito standards

This is a disappointing small cigar, particularly poor effort for Montecristo, one of my favorite manufacturers. Very rough construction, harsh burn and taste, inconsistent. Go with the Zino Platinum XS or the small Macanudo instead.

Still the Best Cigar!!!

Great taste, perfect draw, burn and spectacular construction. Great cigars over all...I LOVE 'em!!

Consistant quality each time!

Very smooth! Great taste with consistant draw and flavor with every one! This one is one of my favorites!

Horrible

Extremely disapointed, horrible taste, smoke hurts your eyes, Monty should be ashamed to put its name on this dog rocket.....

This stogie is a keeper...

I was pleasantly suprised by this cigar considering the rating others had given it. Nice and mild from start to finish. And guess what... It has flavor. Not like the Davidoff's and others that I have been smoking all week.

This review was written about Montecristo Double Corona by Mark Nicks of Minneapolis on February 10, 2007

Good smoke...not great, but very good.

Very nice cigar. The draw was good, the smoke and ash were good as well, The taste varied from very smooth and light at the beginning, to a little harsh and inconsistent in the middle, finishing very smooth and mild. The burn was a lot more uneven than I was expecting out of a $9 cigar. I like the Montecristo #1 better.

Excellent Cigar, Very Close to the Cubans

This is an excellent cigar. I have had a box of the Cuban Montecristo and this is very close. It is smooth from beginning to end and an excellent draw. I would recommend everyone have these in their humidor.

This review was written about Montecristo Churchill by James Haning of TX on December 16, 2006

smooth...creamy...excellent taste and burn!

My first Monte was purchased in a mild sampler pack. It was not the first one in the pack that I smoked because I wanted to wait till I had tried some of the others first. Well...after herfing that Monte I decided to some day buy some more and could not wait to smoke another...that day came after winning an auction for a 5 pack of Torpedo's...now I will always have a Monte on hand in my humi....need I say more. I know many herfers think they are pricey....but sometimes the cost is just plain worth it!

fool me once

I build custom furniture and I was in my shop smoking my regular Torano Silver when a customer offered me a Montecristo #2. That night I smoked that cigar until I could no longer hold it. There were so many different flavors and the aftertaste was lingering and superb. The next day I went out and bought four Montecristos {not cheap}. I went back to my shop and lit one up. To say that I was underwhelmed would be an "under" statement. Where did all that flavor go? The next time I saw my customer, I told him of my experience and he gave me another cigar. He also told me that it was Cuban. Until that time, I assumed that Cuban quality was probably mosty hype. It's not. That second cigar he gave me is aging in my humidor waiting for a special occation. Damn that embargo.

Excellence and consistent quality

I just enjoyed this cigar with coffee this morning overlooking the West Bay of Traverse City. For those who have never been to TC you are missing one of the wonders of the universe. Montecristo are expensive, but I can afford to smoke the most expensive and i would say for the price its well worth the price. Its a mild cigar with a great taste, construction, even burn, perfect draw. We are all looking for those qualities in a cigar purchase. But like most of us want a $12.00 stick for a $1.00. I found out long ago it doesnt happen that way....No matter what line in the Montecristo I purchase it lives up to what I expect. Its not the price, but my smoking experience and hour or so of enjoyment!! I can say that about a CAO, Romeo, Nat Sherman, Upmann. I know some of the guys that have reviewed the line may not share my view, but I try to be fair to the manufacturer, famous and me. If that makes sense???....The Montecristo white band line is rock solid but remember its not a full strength like a Patel or Padron... Look at Davidoff as a comparision. I would personally smoke a Montecristo before forking over the cash for a Davy!! Thou the Davy is a great smoke I will draw the line...Sorry Arthur and Gary but the Cristo is every bit as good!! I can see the Davidoff sales rep having a heart attack!! Men, remember this , the best and most experienced rollers touch the Montecristo's therfore roll a much better cigar and the tobacco is a better grade and blended right. Thats the consistentcy that the MGF. is going for to build reputation. I know I am rambling but I have never had a friend refuse a Montecristo and they always loved them. If your box sucks send it back to Arthur for a full refund!! No he's not my Uncle! One more thing, if a manufacturer says they just found a vintage tobacco thats older than dirt thats not true...they know where every tobbaco leaf is!!! Some of what we get caught up in is marketing and I would tell you even I spend money to try the lastest and greatest cigar. Think about the rare corojo Punch! its so rare it comes out once a year. I never had a problem buying one so thats a bunch of it. It however is a great smoke...but better hurry.... you may not get one!! Not!!! Okay Gary, send me some Occidentals!!! The Torpedo natural to sample and review!!! Could'nt the company come up with a less clinical name for a cigar?? Sounds like an insurance company...And while i am at it what's the deal with the Maroma name??? Can't do the "Fuente Maroma XO something more upscale?? sounds like "my sharona"... Maybe Hal named it!

Dry smoke, impacted center

Hard to start, the Montecristo stayed intact to the middle then burst mid-smoke. Had a lack of flavor, consider this one dry.

Monte #2

I judge all cigars against Havana monte #2's.......That's the starting point. These do not compare, for about the same price.

Didn't live up to it's image!

Of course one needs to form their own opinion of any stick, but I find this legandary name to be quite underwhelming. Taste was average and a bit harsh with no real character, body or smoothness. Burn and all other elements were fine. With so many choices out there... why spend "good" money on these? To impress people? Impress them with taste!

Good Dominican Connecticut Shade Cigar!

This was a good cigar, especially if you like them mild. I am a fan of some of the spicy Honduran cigars that are medium bodied, but I am a bigger fan of the Connecticut shade wrapper cigars and this is one of them. Like many Connecticut shade cigars it was mild and flavorful with hints of vanilla. As with many Connecticut shades it does not have a strong smelly aroma, but a mild sweet vanilla like aroma, even when a little tar builds up at the end.

Not For Me

You know when it comes right down to it a great cigar is what you like.Monte's in my opinion have lost something over the years. There are a lot better cigars out there today for less money too. They are constructed well but the taste is lacking.I would take a Perdoma over a Monte anyday.but like I said it depends on what YOU like.

I prefer the A. Fuente tins, but this is still a quality smoke.

I have had other Montecristo's, but the blend on this one is on the money. Ok! Altadis don't change a thing. A great all around smoke!!

A classic Favorite Never a let-down

Mild tast, a pleasent odor, flawless construction, and Perfect size for you jaw... What more can I say!!!!!! I actually like these more than the VERY expensive White series. and the "famous price" 97$ WOW These suckers are 9 bucks a piece at my smoke shop

Just one of the best

Awesome cigar! Don't start with this because it may turn you off to cigars. Start with a cheap cigar and learn how to smoke a cigar first. Drink a couple beers and light up a Monte. You will not be disappointed. But this cigar is not for beginners.

This review was written about Montecristo Churchill (4) by Steve of Chicago on October 9, 2004

disappointing

So mild that it was virtually tasteless for the first half. It also had a tough draw and burned inconsistently.

This is what I got into cigars for!

Had a couple of the samplers famous offered, and settled on the #1. All their flavors were similar but the 1 seemed to maintain the best for me. Bought two boxes, and let them wait a month in my Humidor before smoking the first. I've since found the longer they age the better they get. Solid construction, consistent & smooth flavor, and what my wife calls a "House Friendly" scent.

Good quick smoke - great for coffee breaks!

I keep a box of these around for the stressful days when I want to run outside and get a quick smoke. Much better than others this size. Doesn't taste like the usual asst. of floor sweepings that go into cigarillos.

Extremely even burn, Very Mild, Perfect white ash

The cigar was very well built, a bit unusually narrow tip however. It burned with the best of em. The cigar produced the whitest ash I have seen yet, and was very mild. I would have liked to tasted more flavors. Construction 8, Burn 10 Flavor 6. Overall 7.5

Really Nice Easy Smoke

Mild, very pleasing flavor and easy finish. It's not very exciting, but an easy smoke with a cool easy draw anyone would/should like. If you favor a rich bodied cigar or a Maduro, this may not be for you.

This review was written about Montecristo Robusto by scubaroyster of Keller, TX on February 18, 2003

Good Quality

The Dominican Montecristos are as good or better than the Cuban versions, in my opinion. I believe the #2 Torpedo is the best of the lot.

Choosey guys choose Montecristo #3

I've tried a few cigars, this cigar kicked my ass. I got a nick buzz like it was my first time. It didn't make me sick to my stomach like other cigars, and it didn't burn my nose and eyes. That's saying a lot, everything burns my nose. This is what I think a cigar should be. Rich and smooth (smooth like butter. I kid you not), burns evenly and slowly, easy to draw, didn't fall to pieces. The second hand smoke, from what some stranger told me, smelled "sweet. not bad at all. You have an extra one?" The after taste you have to experiance. Not the normal tounge burn, dry throat cigar bit, this left me not wanting to eat anything so I could taste it for as long as possible. Then I went and smoked another. famous-smoke.com runs a tight ship, kudos for the quick easy payment and delivery much sooner than I expected. Perfect perfect perfect. I want to be alone with my montecristo #3 now please.

Legend lives up to its rep

I've heard the legend. It's seldom something lives up to its hype. This one does. I found the draw great, nice ash, flavor and aroma mild like I like it. Smooth, with no bite in the whole stick. In this case you get what you pay for.

This review was written about Montecristo #2 Torpedo by Dan Elam of Searcy, AR on February 8, 2002

Disappointing.

I was a little disappointed with these cigars. I've been smoking for years and of course had heard about the legendary Montecristo. I bought a couple 4-packs and I was just a little let down. Fine construction, perfect draw, and it tasted like a weed. Granted, I normally smoke maduros so I'm used to a robust cigar, but even compared to other naturals I though this one was a little bland. Maybe this Montecristo is merely riding the coattails of its Cuban counterpart, I don't know. At any rate, for $150/box, I can think of many other cigars I'd rather smoke.

This review was written about Montecristo Churchill by Joe Barta of Cleveland, Ohio on July 5, 2001

Smooth, mild, but inconsistent

After smoking nearly half a box, I realized that these cigars are still too young, and need some more aging. Inconsistent draw, uneven burn are too frequent for a premium cigar

Montecristo #3

I frequently order the Montecristo #3. I've tried other cigars but this one is mild and consistant in the flavor and the smoke. Can't get a better cigar for the price!

Very good medium size cigar

Flavorful and consistantly well made. Make sure they are from the Garcia factory whichis better than their other sites. It is stamped on the bottom of the box. Ask when you order.

Not worth the entry price

Overpriced but well made medium body cigar. Not as good as a (cheaper) Number 1 and not nearly as good as the Double Corona.

This review was written about Montecristo #2 Torpedo by Michael of Massachusetts on April 10, 2000

Wonderfull appearance, construction and taste.

My location allowed my first Montecristo to be a Cuban. A great cigar but I've found the Dominican Tubos to be even more consistent. It has a mellow, even taste and a richness that I haven't found in another cigar, any brand at any price. I'm no expert, so you'll have to judge for yourself but don't declare a winner till you've tried one of these beauties!

This review was written about Montecristo Tubos by Jeff of Okinawa, Japan on February 18, 2000

On my second box

A very nice cigar. The tast and draw are excellent.I live a few miles from the Mex border and I have had a few of the real Cuban Monticristo's. Mainly the torpedos. The tubo is the closest I've found to the real thig.

A shame to the name. Looks like a good cigar but 1) with this name it should be stonger 2) it should at least have taste recieved on the first tee and by the second tee had changed to a Fuente Sun Shade
