Rocky Patel Cuban Blend Cigars

One of the best

I had this RP Cuban Blend maduro in the humidor for about 6 or 7 months. It is a luxurious smoke, full, flavorful, and the burn is perfect. Gotta go, I'm not finished with it yet. I will buy more.

This review was written about Rocky Patel Cuban Blend Robusto 5 Pack by Steven of hot 'lanta on November 18, 2008

I enjoyed it from pre-light to nub.

If the rest of these are as good as this one is so far, I'll be wishing I'd have picked up a box. Reminded me quite a bit of the Nording. Very good full tobacco taste with some mile spiciness and hints of a caramel like sweetness. Loads of smoke with a nice even burn leaving salt and pepper ash that held to nearly an inch. This smoke was so good I used my 6X2-1/2 inch wood screw to nub it! I see a box in my future, maybe a Monster deal? But wait at least a month, you guys got this months and next months cigar money already!

Excellent Full Bodied Cigar

If you like GC Serie R or Bolivar Confradia (when they're constructed well), you'll like RP Cuban Blend. Goes well with a strong cup of coffee or a nice, peaty scotch.

It's NOT a CUBAN, but it is a fine smoke!

This has made it to the higher ranks in my cigar list.Again I'll say, it is by no means a cuban, but it is a very well built, and very satisfying smoke! This is one of the more "leathery" smokes Ive ever had. I like to enjoy one of these with a couple of New Castle nut brown ales. They are the perefect pair! I highly recommend this cigar to anyone.

VERY GGOD STOGEY

I HAVE DONE ALMOST ALL OF THE RP LINE. THIS ONE IS A KEEPER. BOTH THE NATURAL & MADURO WERE VERY GOOD. THE NATURAL WAS A LITTLE BETTER ALTHOUGH MY PREFERENCE IS MADURO CIGARS. THEY NEED TO SCHOOL UP ON THE MADURO LINES THEY HAVE AND IT COULD BE BETTER.

smoothest of the full bodied cigars

These cigars are extremely smooth for a full flavored cigar. The taste is superb as well. My only complaint is that one or two out of a box have a difficult draw.

This review was written about Rocky Patel Cuban Blend Petite Belicoso by james of massachusetts on July 27, 2008

Really Liked It.

I bought a 5-pack of these and took two over to a friend's house to share. I was impressed with the taste, aroma, and burn. If I have any complaint, it would be that the draw was a little tight, but not bad enough to keep me from buying more in the future. If you like maduro cigars, I suggest you give this one a try.

BORING

I generally like RP cigars (Fusion, Vintage) but the Cuban Blend was, well, boring. It was like smoking air. Hardly any spice and no discernible flavors. I smoked it to the end, hoping for something to develop but it never gained strength or flavor. Instead of Cuban Blend RP should call this cigar, Bland Blend.

Excellent all around full bodied cigar!

If you give these cigars 2-3 weeks in your humidor, your gonna enjoy this smoke! Great draw, great burn, excellent construction and a nice strong full bodied cigar. One of my favorites.

Decent Smoke

This stick really started out rough. As it got down a couple of puffs it actually turned into a decent smoke. It doesn't punch out your taste buds and is pretty smooth once you start getting down to it. I would buy these again but I still prefer my Ghurkas or Monte Cristos.

I've liked them

I was just reading some of the reviews. One of the things I like about Famous is that they will post even the negative reviews ... that's taking a risk for them ... but for me, it adds to their credibility and makes me more likely to use them ... when you have a cigar that has had some mixed reviews on this site, I may be more willing to take a risk myself, knowing that taste in cigars can vary from person to person ... for instance, I have yet to find a "Gurkha" that I really like. Having said the above, I wonder if the negative reviews of the RP Cuban Blend came from a bad batch or incorrectly stored cigars, because the ones that I have had from samplers, I have really liked, so much that the current sale has me really chomping at the bit ... but financially right now, I just can't swing even the sale price of 80 bucks for the toros. Fifty, I could do ... but right now 80 is out of sight. But if my financial situation were different (significant increase in income, lottery, windfall, etc.), there would be no question, I'd go for it. As for why they are called Cuban, I don't know, but a German friend of a friend gave me a Romeo y Julieta corona from Cuba this summer and I really enjoyed it. Within a week I had two cigars that reminded me of that flavor which I have struggled to describe. One was a Rocky Patel Cuban Blend toro. So maybe it's the flavor (as well as construction/appearance) that they are shooting for ... no matter what country the individual component tobaccos are from. Anyway, that's my take. I really like them (properly stored and humidified).

Terrible Construction

Recieved a box of the Torpedo Corojo for my birthday. 90% were severely cracked by the cap! Can't believe these are RP's. Have purchased Toro Maduro without problems, but these will drive me away from RP altogether if this is what their quality control is like. Going back to Partagas.

Sneaks Up On You!

From the start the wrapper is eye candy! Just oozing with oils. Strong pepper up front (maybe thats the bitterness some other reviews suggested) but then smoothed out. Lots of espresso and chocolate. Thick clouds of smoke and a good draw. The only problem was the uneven burn.My guess is that "Cuban Blend" comes from the way the power of this smoke sneaks up on you. You feel it in the belly, a trait I noticed from Cubans I have smoked. Having smoked several in both Corojo and Maduro for some reason the construction seems a little off in the Maduro. All in all a very smooth powerful smoke.

Cuban Blend...What's Mark Got To Do With This?

Hey...there was no way I was going to write a review without scoping out everyone else's opinions first. Mamma didn't raise no fools.(Well, maybe one, but not me.)-----As I've written in a few other Famous reviews, for years I avoided Rocky Patel cigars. I always thought of Rocky as a Milwaukee attorney who got an ingrown hair in his nether region and decided to make some cigars. His early Indian Tabacs reminded me of those Indonesian boom sticks without the odor. Remember those? You had to wash your hands with Ajax to get rid of the smell.-----Anyway, I bought several of Rocky's The Edge, when they were first released, based on the recommendation of several of my cigar junkie friends. I was stunned. The cigars were extraordinary. How could this be? And, of course, the answer was that Rocky had contracted with another manufacturer...Simple answer-----Next stop was a bundle of Famous' RP Factory Select torps. Incidently, these are Sun Grown, and in the Famous listing of cigars it just says, "RP Factory Select." I guess you're supposed to guess the wrapper until you click your mouse?-----Truthfully, I thought the first bundle I received had been annointed by the Cigar Gods. Every cigar was bee-yoo-tee-full and smoked wonderfully. So, I thought it was time to try a few more of Patel's sticks. I ordered a 20 stick sampler of RP blends that Famous had in their summer '07 sales sheet. That's when I had my first Rocky Patel Cuban Blend Toro in maduro.----- Boys and girls, in some of the other folks' reviews that I read, these sticks are panned pretty emphatically. All I can think of is that some people have a totally different preception of what a medium to full bodied cigar should taste like. After I smoked one Cuban Blend, I thought, "Steve, treat yourself and have another." And, I did.-----No B.S., no hyperbole: These don't taste like Cuban cigars. Okay? Why Rocky and Famous decided to name them Cuban Blend is beyond me. I'd guess that neither Rocky nor Famous actually know the blend of this cigar, so it became the "Cuban Blend." If you read the description, all it says is that it contains "Honduran Ligero". Hmmm....maduro wrapper, Connecticut Broadleaf? Brazilian aparica? Mexican San Andres? Maybe an H2000....Hey...it's a Cuban Blend! I enjoyed the cigar(s) and frankly, think alot of the wrapper, binder, filler descriptions are little more than promo copy. I've got a box of Cuban Blend toros on order. If they're anything like those in the sampler, I'll enjoy all twenty, except for those mooched by friends.

Another nice blend by RP

Very attractive wrapper and very well packed. Notes of pepper up front but smoothed out right away. Lots of woody notes and very creamy. I really loved the thick volume of smoke, the draw was good and the burn was even right to the end. Smoked this after resting in my humidor for 3 weeks. No, not Cuban, but another nice job by Rocky

Nice, complex blend

I've received these a few times in samplers--didn't like them at first. But then I got one that must have been in its prime--it was exquisite! I generally don't like Nicaraguan cigars, but these have just enough Nic. in the blend to add nicely to the complexity without overpowering the other flavors. I bought a box on the Monster deal, and have really been enjoying them. Like many RP's, they are full flavor, but not harsh.

The corojo is even better than the maduro and I referred to those excellent cigars earlier. US prices and availability far exceed the UK too.

More powerful than I expected and I have been approached by other cigar smokers who were smoking Cubans at the time who wanted to swap theirs due to the aroma. Roy,R

Rich and aromatic!

My first exposure to this brand was in the natural and I thought it was a good smoke. But in the Maduro, this cigar is outstanding! Very mellow with hints of coffee and leather. It's consistent all the way thru the smoke with a near-perfect ash. This is my favorite of the Rocky Patel line. I highly recommend you try these cigars.

Time in the humidor did the trick

Well I thought it would be only fair to give another review after some much needed time in my humidor. Although its only been a little over two weeks in my humidor with the plastic wrapper off to help speed up the process. I didn't have much hope after my first bitter and tasteless experience with my first RP cuban blend I smoked right out of the box.Its unreal what a difference it made, I noticed no bitterness what so ever and like before the taste and aroma got better the longer you smoked it but it started out good and just got better , the burn wasn't the best but a little touch up here and there did the trick. This cigar really turned out to be tastey after only 2 weeks in my humidor at about 68 percent, the draw was still a littler tighter then I like but it definately wasn't choked and the flavor/aroma really had a nutty/ creamy scent to it topped by RP'S DISTINCTIVE AROMA whitch I like very much. I now would reccomend these rp cuban blends but let them sit for at least a couple of weeks or youll be very disappointed. I am now very glad I bought them and they can only get better with time I just Wish they were this way when I bought them but I guess you can't rush a good thing. I say buy a box let them sit and you'll be very happy.

Very good smoke

I don't understand all the negative reviews on this cigar. Most referred to a bitterness. Maybe they had the corojo, but my maduro that I cooked in the humi for 3 months was EXCELLENT! Very smooth, some spice with undertones of nut and chocolate.Spot on draw and good burn needing one touch up.I think Rocky's got a winner (IMHO).

This review was written about Rocky Patel Cuban Blend Toro by Mike of Lancaster,Pa on June 8, 2007

A little bitter

Well My first impression was I cant beleive its a RP. The first quarter of the cigar was very very bitter and not much flavor. I found myself having to take a drink of my coffee after every puff to hide the bitterness. The draw was a little tight but with a little messaging it got better. To my supprise after the first half the bitterness was going away possibly I was getting use to it but definately got better the cigar woke up and started tasting better with more flavor. ALL IN all I was very disapointed but I do believe with some time in the humidor it has potential, would I buy them again no. In all fairness it was the first one out of the box and didnt let them spend any time in the humidor but never had to with any other RP's SO that being said im still a RP fan just a little shocked that Rocky would let these out of the factory this green tasting. As far as RP'S Go I think i'll stick with the edge which is a excellent cigar and really enjoy .

This review was written about Rocky Patel Cuban Blend Toro by The Factor of Beaverton Oregon on June 1, 2007

Unremarkable

Nice looking, but thats about it. A bit tight on the draw, and the flavor doesn't seem up to Rocky's usual standards. I've had Cubans, and this doesn't taste like one to me.

This review was written about Rocky Patel Cuban Blend Toro 5 Pack by Doc Arnold of NV on May 26, 2007

IT'S ALL ABOUT THE FLAVOR

I MUST ADMIT I WAS A LITTLE APPREHENSIVE ABOUT ORDERING SOME OF THESE. TO MY DELIGHT IT ONLY LASTED FOR ONE OR PUFFS. THIS IS ONE OF THE MOST FLAVORFUL CIGARS I HAVE HAD THE DELIGHT IN SMOKING. FULL FLAVORED...FULL BODIED, NICE CONSTRUCTION AND A BEAUTY TO LOOK AT. THE BURN IS NOT ALWAYS PERFECT BUT THE TASTE SURELY MAKES UP FOR ANY MINOR INCONSISTANCIES IT MAY HAVE. I HAVE SINCE ORDERED SEVERAL BOXES WITHOUT ANY REGRETS. A VERY SOLID VITOLA....WORTHY OF A PLACE IN YOUR HUMIDOR.

This review was written about Rocky Patel Cuban Blend Toro by BRUCE F. BARNJUM of OH on May 17, 2007

don't bother

As one who likes rocky vintages and has smoked strong cigars for years I was very disappointed with this cigar. the draw, burn, taste and construction are totally inconsistent. even assessing the best of them I wouldn't get these again. I tried them because I got them cheap in an auction. now I wouldn't smoke these for any money. Well that's not true. I'd smoke them for a buck a piece I guess. I can't believe they are rated so high. stick with 1990 and 1992.

ONE OF MY FAVORITES!

I bought a box of these a little over a month ago and let them sit for a week before I lit one up - bad decision (which I probably thought it would be, but i just couldn't wait!) It had a terrible draw and bitter flavor and I decided to let them sit them sit for another week or so. The second one that I puffed on has been the best one yet! None that I have smoked so far were as good as this one. Within the first few puffs I knew it was top notch, nutty and spicy with a hint of chocolate for the first half then the nutty was muted and it transformed to a spicier flavor with roasted coffee, excellent stick. I recently bought a box of RP Cuban Blend Maduro's and I have high expectations for that one as well!

This review was written about Rocky Patel Cuban Blend Toro by Greg C of Valentine, NE on May 5, 2007

Excellent smoke!

Construction was great. It was a nice, firm, but not overly firm stick. It looked flawless (in my noob eyes) and lit nicely. It was a smoke powerhouse for about 1 minute. Serious smoke coming off it. It settled down, with nice, consistent smoke after that. The draw was quite easy, and it seemed to be quite a mild smoke, concidering its advertised as a full strength. About 1 inch down it started to get a little stronger, but not by much. Perhaps after a few more months, it will pick up a little. It burnt as straight as you could want too.

This review was written about Rocky Patel Cuban Blend Petite Belicoso 5 Pack by Joel of Australia on May 5, 2007

SUPERB

In A word, superb. It hardly seems worth buying the usual american market selections such well made and flavoursome cigars are on offer.Much cheaper than a Cuban which we get in the UK and nearly as good.

This review was written about Rocky Patel Cuban Blend Toro by Creekend of UK on May 3, 2007

Solid

Ligero Ligero Ligero. If you want a full bodied mouthful of tangy goodness this is the shiznit. The only thing that could have really improved this is for RP to have used a sweet wrapper instead which would've balanced the flavors out a bit more. Other than that you probably won't find a better stick to smoke with a nice Jack 'n water or a Pint-O-Guiness.

This review was written about Rocky Patel Cuban Blend Toro by TeeJay of Lincoln, R.I. on April 23, 2007

Beautifully made, but...

These cigars are beautifully made, very well constructed, with a great burn and draw. The only problem is the flavor is kind of disappointing. The cap tastes like paper on my tongue, and the cigar has little flavor compared to what you're expecting. Still a decent smoke, just not sure its worth the price.

WOW!!!!!!

I just got my first 5 pack of these beauties in yesterday. I couldn't wait, I tore into the box like a kid on Christmas morning. I opened them up and just couldn't resist lighting one up. WOW I was SHOCKED! They looked BEAUTIFUL, they have a sort of leathery smell it was WONDERFUL. I nipped off the cap and lit up. The first 3/4 of an inch was a bit spicy, sort of like The Edge. The spice faded quickly and gave way to a full bodied but very mellow flavor. It reminded me of a cross between the Sungrown and a 1990 Vintage. Towards the end it went a bit spicy again with the other flavors still there. What a joy to smoke. I'll be buying these in quantity next time. Once again great shipping/packaging Famous you guys are the best. And yet again Rocky makes one hell of a smoke!

Couldn't Believe It Was A Rocky!

These bitter sticks that have little complexity of flavor bear no resemblance to the other fine Rocky Patel products out there. I bought 5 and will let the remaining ones sit in the humidor for at least a year and hope for some improvement. Recommend that RP discontinue this line.

Disappointing

I bought a box when they were on sale on monster.com and I can see why they were on sale. These torpedos are one of the worst tasting cigars I've ever had. Bitter with a terrible after taste. I would prefer the Rocky Patel seconds or selects to these, at half the price.

This review was written about Rocky Patel Cuban Blend Torpedo by Gregg of Gillette WY on January 16, 2007

These could be my "every day" cigar

So full of flavor, at your reasonable price these could easily become one of my "every day" smokes. But I don't think I should spoil myself that much - so I use them as a "reward" instead when I get a large amount of work done. I highly recommend these to people who love full-flavor cigars... and did to a guy whose "every day" smoke is the Edge, and he likes them as well.

Not Good

The worst Rocky Patel cigar I have ever had. It smelled like some sort of tea before I lit it. I couldn't even smoke a 1/4 of it before putting it out. Bitter, nasty taste. I gave the rest away and had my friends cuss at me later. Nothing about this blend reminded me of "cuban".

Excellent cigars and worth the price.

These are fine cigars. They are very well made and full flavored. I haven't had a hard draw among these, but a simple solution for one is to open a small paper clip and after clipping the end of the cigar, insert the prong of the paper clip into the end of the cigar in four or five places. This has generally solved the problem for me. These cigars are an easy 9.0

A Real Winner of a Blend!

This is a real winner of a blend! A very consistent and well-crafted cigar, full of flavor and well-balanced; an excellent addition to the humidor. I always include one in my travel box, and it's the usual choice at the cigar lounge.

Pretty Darn Good!!

Yeah, it was good, but not as flavorful as I had expected. My buddy and I shared a 5 pack and the first 2 offered weak flavors at best for a "full flavored" cigar, but when we smoked a couple more on the way to a ball game they seemed to come alive with flavor. So, maybe just a little inconsistent. (8.75)

Another tasty Rocky

Another great tasting Rocky, full of flavor and easy to smoke. A definite step up from the great seconds & selects, with a bigger impact on the palate, tho' not sure it's value is 100% more than those two, but definitely worth a bit of a premium.

Not Very Good

This was a huge let down. This cigar was on the green bitter side in flavor. I heard rumors that Rocky changed the cigar 3 times because he did not like the finished product. This cigar might age very well but at this point they are not worth smoking. I hate saying that about a Rocky Patel cigar
