Solo Cafe Cigars

A poor replacement for Kaluha. Terrible.

A poor replacement for Kaluha. Tastes like it was dunked in a cup of strong coffee and left in the sun to dry. Terrible.

Great Little Smoke, Very Pleased

I had no idea what to expect from this little guy. I've traditionally been attracted to robustos or anything beefier but have recently been drawn to try something with a smaller ring guage, which led me to these and a few others. Plus, two of my brothers-in-law come over on Sunday evenings now and they like something a little smaller and with a nice flavor or sweet aroma to it. That being said, I thought I'd give these a try. I'm very happy with this stick, to say the least. The bouquet before lighting is pretty nice, and the cigar looks great. Honestly, the construction is flawless, which leads to a perfect burn, the ash is pure white and solid until I tap it off. The draw is wonderful and there's tons of thick, creamy smoke, just like the description states. The smoke's aroma is very pleasant as well. All-in-all, in my book, it's a winner, and I'll definitely buy more when these are gone... great coffee companion for sure! Get some!

Gets a bad wrap that it doesn't deserve

I have had Solo Cafe the old and new blends and they are both very good. I think it is funny how several people complain about how they burn, how the ash holds up, and also compares them to the Drew Estates Java. Lets see Java Robusto $130 per box Solo Cafe $46 a box you can't compare the two. Additionally for the people talking about burn and firmness of the ash there is way too many other variables to consider (where you smoked it, humidor conditions, etc..) If you are looking for a good smoke for a good cost you can't beat the Solo Cafe's. Big James

Wafe Good but wish was more flavor

I just got me a bundle and the date on them were almost a year ago normally I would be VERY pleased as age is always good for non flavored smokes. In this case though they are flavored so I found them to be a lot less flavorful. I hope they continue to make this vitola but it would be nice to have more flavoring. I do like the fact that the sweet tip is almost gone by this point as I normally don't like that but I do enjoy the coffee like flavor and if it were a bit stronger It would be great. In this case I suppose its because of the age. So buy them up guys and gals cause the longer they sit the flavor dissipates. Also the wrapper color varies A Lot but that doesn't affect the smoke. This would be much better in maduro though. Over all I like these smokes and they are perfect for my 30 min commute to work they go great with coffee and the aroma it leaves in my truck isn't bad not like a stale tobacco smell but more coffee. Also I don't think I will try any other vitola and if they aren't making this one anymore then Ill have to deal. One more thing as a substitute for a Java I would choose this in a second over Isla Del Sol. (I don't know any other coffee cigars)

Good, cheap, what else you need?

I've enjoyed solo's before, but was weary due to the negative comments of late, but the ones I got from auction recently were just like the ones I've had before. They aren't as good as a java, but when you can by 3 for the price of 1 java they are good enough for me! Right out of the box, they had good burn, smooth smoke and good taste. It is true that at first they have a sweet hint like Nutrasweet, but that wears off after a few seconds in your mouth.

Amazing

Bought a box of these after seeing the great reviews and was not disappointed. Amazing taste & aroma. Great burn and draw as well. Smoked it down to the nub until I nearly burned my lips. Will be a permanent part of my humidor from now on. Definitely worth a try.

Great right out of the box

Well I've heard alot about this cigar, alot of bad,But like my grandama siad if don't have anything good to say don't say any thing at all, but grandpa siad there no such thing as bad sex just some better than others. With that siad. This is a great cigar right out of the box in great Famous style. I say try it before you say no compared to what gigars you could end up with off some sites Famous will do you justice on the description on thier cigars. I lite recieved my order next day ground, and becauce of the hype I decieded to lite one up then and there. and the taste taste was great (5), construction (5) Burn even (5+) draw (5). Hey what I say is try a 5 pack and see for yourself, and if you don't like them I'll buy them from you.

Great coffee cigar

This is a nice lightly flavored cigar. Burns good and smokes very well. A mellowing cigar. I work nights and have one on the drive home in the morning...makes the ride so much nicer.

these cig's ROCK!!!

I dare you to bust out your wallet and give these a whirl! They are awesome! I now have 3 guys here at work who hound-dog me to DEATH when we go out for a drink after work! "You got them funky cigars - the flat ones?" "You bringin' any of those killer coffee-thing cigars?" and on and on and on! Awesome!

I beg to differ...besides, times change....

I've smoked a ton of these Solo Cafes in the last few years, from the corona on up, and from singles to bundles. When they went off the market, I was devastated. Now that they are "back" I see they HAVE changed somewhat. Gone is the box press, but, now we have a good-tasting cigar with a firm ash [yay...no more unexpected ashes in the lap] as well as an even burn. OK, it's NOT as heavy on the chocolate and coffee flavors as the old ones, but the flavors are STILL there and it's STILL a good smoke. I'll STILL buy them, preferring the robusto as the "best buy". There is just nothing else on the market that can compare in price OR quality.

Just plain Bad

Just got a new shipment of the Solo Cafe new mix and was very disappointed. No where near the cigar it used to be. Don't waste your money, this one need some serious work back in the shop.

NOT like a Java

Ever since Java by Drew Estate vanished, I have been anxious to find something similar. I had heard that the Solo Café could be a comparable replacement. Come to find out the Solo Café line was also sold out when I initially went to buy. I was excited to see that Solo Café came back recently for my chance to compare to the Java. Huge disappointment. I have no idea what the ?old? blend for Solo Café? was like, but this newer blend is terrible. The sweet tip has a nutrasweet after taste. It was like I was smoking a diet Coke. The burn and draw were okay, aside from that it was barely at the level of a ?cigar? you would buy at a corner convenient store.

Not What it Used to Be

The earlier iteration of the Solo Cafe was a dry coffee-flavored cigar. They were great: similar to Java, but half the price. This new batch is sweet, with only a faint hint of coffee. I don't care for them.

This review was written about Solo Cafe Toro by Dr Jackson Underwood of Saan Diego on October 16, 2007

Not as good as the first ones

The new Solo Cafe doesn't compare with the older version. They are not box pressed but they do burn better than before. Ash looks great. Nice draw on the Robustos but the Coronas were a bit tight. The flavor and aromas these cigars had before went missing in action. Previously Drew Estate Java and Solo Cafe Cigars were comparable in taste. I couldn't tell the difference. Now its like night and day. I still have 40 - 50 of the older batch and I will smoke them SPARINGLY.... Still a good Cigar.

New SOLO CAFE is not worth it

I loved ,past tense Solo Cafe. I don't know where this "new" Solo Cafe came from but do us all a favor and SEND THEM BACK. They used to be a delight to the taste buds. This new blend is not even close.

An American Tragedy

I understand that this line will no longer be offered by Famous-Smoke. I was fortunate to get the last bundle of toros as well as the remaining single coronas, but I mourn the passing of a really fine, affordable Drew Estate substitute for its Drew Estate cousin, the Java. Good, box-pressed coffee-flavored cigars like the the Java, and especially the smaller Solo Cafe with its box press, too, are very hard to come by. Its mild-medium flavor and nice ash make it appealing to common guys like me to enjoy without breaking the piggybank. So what if one occasionally canoes or tunnels...hold it correctly and it will not. I can honestly say that during the run of the Solo Cafe, I never had to pitch one prematurely due to its imperfections. That's why, to me, the discontinuing of this cigar is an American tragedy.

AWESOME

I have been stocking up on these. After Ordering 5 boxes there is one left :-) Tastes exactly like the Java and at this price you won't find them ever again. Wish these were sold elsewhere.

Love these

Solo Cafe became my favorite after the first puff. Very similar to Java but affordable. Thick creamy smoke that you want to chew on. I'm very disappointed that this cigar will no longer be carried at Famous Smoke.

Great Taste, Terrible Burn

Sole Cafe Toros are very similar to Drew Estates Java in taste and aroma. The only drawback to this lower-priced Java alternative is the Sole Cafe Toros's terrible burn. Picked up a bundle of 20 on auction; found that 3 out of 5 canoe, run, tunnel and otherwise burn so badly you need a pair of cigar sissors at hand to keep trimming the things to a smokeable condition. 2 out of 5 will burn just fine. The flavor and taste is wonderful and the draw is fine however, so guess the bad burn is a decent tradeoff for the price. Will buy more, am sharpening cigar sissors. Sole Cafe, get the burn problem solved and you will have a winner here.

nice flavor, bad burn

They frequently have streaks, but a good flavor which kind balances out the value.

Almost like going to Starbucks.

After reading other reviews of this smoke, I decided to throw caution to the wind and give it a try. It did not disappoint. I love quite a few of Drew Estates Cigars and I have even tried the Java. It makes for a great second hand cigar, for I could not even tell the difference. My only fear is that the word will get out and they will be harder to come by...Wait did I just say all of that out loud?...Damn it! Ummmm, Don't buy this cigar....uuuuhhhh...It stinks! Yeah, that's it, that's the ticket...Enjoy!

One of my favorites

I got a box of these on auction, they sounded interesting, I like the Drew Estate Acid and La Vieja Habana lines, so I thought I would give these a try. Well I was thoroughly delighted in this great tasting smoke. The wrapper has a sweet taste to it that is quite enjoyable, it brings a nice dimension to the smoke. They also have a great aroma. I have tried three so far, the first had a terrible tunneling to it, but I could not put it down because the flavor was so great. The second one burned perfect. The third had a little tunneling problem too. Even with the problems in construction these have moved up into my top three favorite cigars based on the great taste. Note: I love reading the Famous Smoke customer reviews, however I kind of felt like a parasite, so I am writing my first review to become a contributor to this terrific forum.

Drink it or smoke it

When I smoked my first one last week I knew I had fallen in love - the date code on these is from Feb 2006, so they are well aged and very smooth. The wrapper has a sweetness with an aromatic coffee flavor that is just right. Smoking them is a true delight and I have already ordered another bundle..... because once gone they are gone.

Not Bad at All

Just received my Solo Coronas. It is a smooth cigar with a nice draw. Not as tasty compared to the Java Mocha, it is pretty close, but not as good. I love the Java Mocha! The Solo Cafe is a good smoke.

When they're good, they're great

Got a bundle of these babies. So far, only one has been sub par, and it was rolled too loose. The rest of them have been dead on. The burn has been good for the most part. A tad flaky on the ash, but pretty dense for the most part. Taste has been a dead ringer for Java. But I've had Javas that were rolled loose too. These are great, and you can bet I'll be buying more of these in the near future, and keeping the 'ol humidor stocked with these. Great shipping Famous, better than other "online/catalog" stores I have dealt with in the recent past. Two thumbs up.

Very impressive - similar to Java

I was impressed with the Solo Cafe brand by Drew Estates. Great coffee and dark tobacco taste very similar to the Java. Well rolled, good box pressed appearance and feel. A very good cigar and a great value. It has become one of my favorites.

A great smoke for the money!

A friend of mine introduced me to the Solo. I am a diehard fan of the Java`s but because of their price and availability I was always looking for a smoke that was similar in taste but a little more close to my budget.I am glad to say that for the price these cigars are a bargain. They are pretty close to the Java`s but burn a little less clean and have a very slight bitter after taste. The flavor is pretty damn close and the draw is wonderful.I will still keep the Java`s at the top of my list as my favorite smoke but these have moved ahead of my #2 smoke the Juicy Lucy.

The Perfect Morning Smoke.

Before I found Solo Cafe, I'd been regularly purchasing Java by Drew Estate at three times the price. I really can't tell the difference between the two in both construction and taste. I'm already 5 smokes into my first bundle and I plan to order more soon. These little coronas are a perfect compliment to that morning cup of coffee. If you like the Javas and you don't want to go broke, Solo is the way to go.

A suprise from the first puff.

The cigar looks so innocent on arrival. Nothing fancy about it, just a good looking cigar, with a dark oily wrapper. Good weight for its size, and solid construction. But then you light it. The taste is complex and wonderful. Coffee, earthy, sweet, smooth, and just plain fantastic. From start to finish, this cigar is never bitter. I enjoy sitting on my balcony after a hard day's work, and slowly puff on this cigar. For all the pricier premium cigars, this must be one of the best I have had.

Awesome...... Better than expected!!!

I picked up a bundle on sale and was hoping they would be close to the Java sticks I bought earlier in the year. I wasn't disappointed..... I actually like these better. They have a slightly sweeter wrapper with excellent draw, soild contstruction and a nice clean burn. Not bad for $1.60 a smoke.

This review was written about Solo Cafe Robusto by Todd of Northern CA on September 13, 2006

Incredible cigar! Incredible buy!

Since these are "close out" cigars I would recommend stocking up while you can. I love Java cigars, and when I smoke these I cannot tell the difference. Well there is one difference, these are about 1/3rd. the price of the Java brand, and made by the same folks. Don't miss these while you still can.

This review was written about Solo Cafe Corona by Bob of Topeka, Kansas on August 29, 2006

"Wow" is an understatement!

I have done a side-by-side comparison with this cigar and Java, the Drew Estate/Rocky Patel collaboration. Aromatically, they are dopplegangers...They smell and taste almost exactly the same. Instead of a dark Brazilian wrapper like the Java, Drew has replaced it with a rich mexican wrapper that looks just as good in the quality dept., imparts its flavor beautifully, and burns very evenly. The mexican wrapper on the Solo Cafe is more of a caramel color, but goes head to head with Java in quality of wrapper. As I have found with most Drew cigars, they have an almost effortless draw which really enhances the pleasure for me. This cigar is a triumph in many respects, but I mostly applaud Drew for his resourcefulness in recreating that same $8 taste in a $2 budget cigar, without compromising quality. I almost didn't want to write this review, because I don't want to let this secret out but it's too good to keep to yourself. If you love Java's but hate the price, Dr. Joker has the remedy you need.......Solo Cafe. Take a bundle, and chuckle to yourself in satisfaction every time you light one up, knowing that out there somewhere, some poor slob just paid $8-$10 for the same stick you just stole from here. Excelsior!

This review was written about Solo Cafe Robusto by The Joker of Ohio on May 25, 2006

chewy, heady smoke, dramatically underpriced.

I stumbled across this item on auction and "stole" them for $27.00 with no fore knowledge of what was coming. Isn't it amazing how good a cigar can be when it is really pleasing and you only paid a buck fifty for it? Very well made, firm, medium, with a wonderful bouquet. Suggest you "steal" some for yourself. paul

This review was written about Solo Cafe Robusto by paul cummins of CA on May 18, 2006

Mild to medium smoke...

...it tastes a LOT richer than it costs! It IS made by Drew Estate, and for the life of me, I cannot distinguish it from its cousin, the Java corona. I'm very pleased to have bought these for more than half the Java price and you can bet that I'll be ordering this brand again.
