Avanti cigars was formed in 1901 when Dominic Anthony and Frank Suraci landed in New York City. The brothers left Calabria, Italy with the idea that their small, hand-rolled Toscani cigars would be well-received in the growing local Italian-American communities. Within 30 years, the Suracis' State Leaf Company bought out their leading competitors, the Parodis, and moved the production of their popular cigars to Scranton, Pa., after 1929's stock market crash. Long Island's DeNobili Cigar Company became the next Avanti Cigar acquisition after World War II, making the Suraci brothers responsible for 75% of the sales of Italian-style cigars. Even though their history dates back over 100 years, it wasn't until 1970 when the Suraci family officially renamed the company as Avanti Cigar, based on the popularity of their premier anisette-flavored tip cigars by the same name. Supervised by the fourth generation of the family, in 2023 Avanti cigar production was moved from the Dunmore, PA facility to the La Aurora Cigars factory in the Dominican Republic.
Considered some of the best cigars made in America, all of Avanti's smokes are made with only the finest hand picked Tennessee and Kentucky tobaccos, from at least three different crop years. The fire cured tobacco is smoked over hickory logs, then fermented for full body and flavor. What makes these Italian style cigars different is that there's no binder - special rolling machines combine a "cut master blend" filler with the wrapper, which actually wraps around the whole of the filler tobacco twice. To finish the cigar, the ends are hand clipped and left to age for up to 6 weeks; it's that drying and aging process that gives them their slightly curved shape, as well as what allows you to store Avanti's offerings, including Parodis without a humidor.
