But Foundation is not your average Nicaraguan boutique, as there are at least two big names behind the company’s success: Nicholas Melillo - aka Nick R. Agua, and AJ Fernandez. Nicholas Melillo is a former member of the Drew Estate management team, and his experience at one of the top factories in Central America has paid dividends…purchasing tobacco for DE and having had a hand in some of the blending processes of their cigars, Nick has world-class cred when it comes to purchasing the finest cigar tobaccos on the market to make his blends; in a word, they’re complex. He’s also a native of Connecticut, renowned worldwide for its tobaccos. And now it all comes together in Foundation Cigars.

There are many cigar factories in Nicaragua, but Nick chose to rely on the one and only AJ Fernandez to help him produce his cigars.

El Gueguense debuted in 2015, finding a spot on the Top 25 Cigars of the Year list within its first year. “The Wise Man” is full bodied, cedar aged, and big in spicy flavor. Highly rated, too.

The Tabernacle is made with Connecticut broadleaf tobacco, smoking dark, sweet, and flavorful. It’s Nick’s love note to Broadleaf, which was used to great effect during his days at Drew Estate - and it’s where he gets an assist from AJ Fernandez’ spicy Nicaragua-grown filler blend, accented with San Andres binder.
