About Oliva Cigars History

Oliva cigars started in 1866 when Melanio Oliva first began planting tobacco in the Pinar del Rio region of Cuba. Melanio suspended operations while he fought for Cuba's independence from Spain. His oldest son Facundo took over operations in the 1920's and successfully ran the business before turning the company over to his son, Gilberto. Gilberto played a significant role in shifting Oliva to brokering tobacco, however, by the 60's due to political pressure he was forced to leave his home behind in search of a new place to grow his tobacco. After traveling a good part of the world in search of fertile land, Gilberto finally settled in Esteli, Nicaragua where the Oliva factory is now the second largest in the country. In 1995, Gilberto and his son Gilberto Jr. launched the Gilberto Oliva brand which evolved into the modern Oliva brand. Oliva's farms are now known as one of the best and as they continued to pump out quality cigars with remarkable consistency and outstanding flavor.

Now working with his son Erik Jr., he and his family have had nothing but success with scores of 90+ ratings on their Serie V, O, and G lines as well as their Mast Blends.
