Luciano Cigars have written their story as “a passion for people, creativity, and the extraordinary flavor found in carefully crafted premium cigars.” The company began as a nonprofit in order to provide fair wage cigar manufacturing jobs in Estelí, Nicaragua. By 2019 the non-profit became Ace Prime Cigars and allied itself with Crowned Heads via Tabacalera Pichardo. Then, in September of 2022 company namesake, co-founder, and CEO, Luciano Meirelles, along with co-founder, former San Antonio Spurs center and power forward, Tiago Splitter, announced that the company name was changing to Luciano Cigars, and rebranded Tabacalera Pichardo to Luciano Tabacos S.A.
Considering Luciano’s brief history, their cigars have done extremely well in the market - garnering an Aficionado Top 25 #12 Cigar of 2021 for the Luciano The Dreamer Lancero, as well as a number of 90+ ratings for Fiat Lux, Mas Igneus, and Maria Lucia.
The sweeping theme for Luciano Cigars is “The Light. ” More simply, enlightenment in its various forms; and so, each blend embodies its own philosophical twist that goes beyond the wrapper.
Inspired by the light of knowledge, Fiat Lux is a medium-full selection that boasts a high-priming Ecuador Sumatra wrapper over a Nicaraguan binder and filler. In his review of the Fiat Lux Intuition, Cigar Advisor reviewer, Gary Korb, wrote: “Just about everything about this Robusto said ‘perfect cigar’…I could probably smoke this Fiat Lux every day.”
Luciano – The Dreamer was inspired by the book, The Artisan Soul, created to explore “the unique human capacity of dreaming.” The Dreamer is medium-full with a blend of Nicaraguan and Peruvian tobaccos under an Ecuador Habano Corojo ’99 wrapper. Aficionado gave it a score of 92, writing that it issued “sublime flavors of chocolate-covered almonds, café au lait and just a bit of spice.”
Mas Igneus is Catalan for “House of Ignition,” which is why this “unique and peculiar” blend evokes “the essence of the creation.” It’s one of the more unique cigars in the Luciano stable, boasting an Ecuador Corojo 98 wrapper over Brazilian binder and Nicaraguan fillers. Plus, the Short Robusto received an Aficionado 90, saying Mas Igneous “delivers tasty notes of vanilla, cinnamon, vermouth, semisweet chocolate, and some orange peel.”
Maria Lucia is a blend inspired by the life of a valiant woman and mother who faced the hardest of hardships and demonstrates that, despite it all, we have “the capacity to hold onto the light.” The 5-nation blend is also one of the most intriguing: medium-full, like all Luciano blends, the cover leaf is a Connecticut Broadleaf. It’s also earned a 90 tasting score from Aficionado who said, “Every puff from this rectangular robusto smacks of chocolate-covered almonds accented by notes of caramel and sweet herbs all leading to a long finish.”
Luciano Cigars handles every phase of the cigar making process. Their Ecuador farms provide wrapper, including Corojo ’98, Corojo ’99, and Criollo 2012. Several varieties of Ecuador Sumatra and a proprietary Ecuador Connecticut-seed hybrid are also cultivated. Luciano’s Nicaragua farm operation includes acreage in the Condega and Pueblo Nuevo regions of Nicaragua for filler, mostly Corojo and Criollo, while growers in Peru and Costa Rica are also valuable resources. Additionally, since each Luciano blend is created with the utmost of patience, fermenting and processing often takes years before being rolled to completion. These are rich tasting artisanal blends that every avid cigar smoker should experience. Browse the lines and find the Luciano cigar that’s right for you.
