Rojas Cigars is the brainchild of Noel Rojas, who has a real thing for cigars with small ring gauges. If you’ve ever seen the letters “KSG” associated with his name, that’s because it stands for “King of the Small Cigars.” Why? Because, according to one source, “Rojas proclaims he is royalty when it comes to making them.”
Rojas is not a household name to a lot of cigar smokers, but if you’ve ever smoked a Guayacan, Ezra Zion, or a Nomad, he either made it or collaborated on it. Based out of Richardson, TX, between 2019 and 2020 Rojas released Bluebonnets, Statement, and KSG, all of which are made at Tabacalera Flor de San Luis S.A. in Estelí, Nicaragua.
So, what’s the deal with these smaller ring gauge cigars? For one, more cigar smokers than you think actually prefer Coronas, Petit Coronas, Panatelas, Lanceros, and the like. Another thing is, many master blenders tend to prefer these thinner sizes for testing the flavor profile of a blend. You certainly get more wrapper flavor – that’s for sure. They also take less time to smoke than the big daddies, which can be a big factor for some cigar smokers.
Rojas Bluebonnets Cigars are a three vitola line with an all-Corojo leaf blend from Ecuador (wrapper) and Nicaragua (binder & filler). There’s a Corona, a Lancero, and a Robusto, each expertly rolled and finished with a semi-closed foot. Bluebonnets offer a superb construction, medium body, excellent balance, and a sweet-spicy character.
Rojas Statement Cigars offer the same three shapes as the Bluebonnets but with a Mexican San Andrés maduro wrapper and an all-Nicaraguan core blend. They have a fuller-body, plus notes of tart fruit, sundry spices, and a hint of caramel.
With big ring cigars having become somewhat of a standard these days, some manufacturers don’t even bother making cigars like Lanceros and Petite Coronas. That’s because they don’t enjoy the popularity that Toros and Gordos do. But Noel Rojas has stepped up to the plate and challenged all that because, sometimes the biggest flavor comes from the smallest cigar.
