SWAG cigars are remarkable, in that you may not realize it when you smoke one…but these Dominican powerhouses burn with an intensity you’d swear was all Nicaraguan.
The idea for SWAG cigars was hatched at the 2009 Grammy Awards: Rafael’s stepson, rap producer Infamous, was nominated for three awards, winning one – Best Rap Album, given to Lil’ Wayne’s “Tha’ Carter III”. Nodal was at the show, and attended one of the after parties, handing out his Oliveros King Havano cigars…it was at this party where Lil’ Wayne told him point blank: “You need a cigar with more swag.”
And with that, SWAG Puro Dominicano cigars were born.
Nodal ditched the traditional packaging he had in mind for a more modern look and feel, thoroughly laced the blend with rich Dominican ligero that was sourced from a single farm, and rolled out a new kind of Dominican cigar…it was lush with aroma and creamy flavors inherent in cigars from the DR, but strong and complex like a Nicaraguan cigar. This SWAG Puro Dominicano would be the introduction of what we all now know as Boutique Blends.
SWAG SoBe – or SWAG Cigars South Beach – would have a similar kind of inspiration. As LeBron James, Dwyane Wade and the Miami Heat hoisted the 2012 NBA Championship trophy for a second time, Rafael and his Boutique Blends cigars cohorts left the festivities at the American Airlines Arena in Miami and headed for South Beach to celebrate. The SoBe was a new cigar blend in the works; but when its Dominican tobaccos and Habano wrapper were paired with mojitos at one of the numerous oceanside celebrations, it was determined that this smoke should be the SoBe cigar, honoring the win and the Miami area’s style.
SWAG Black is again a Dominican puro, whose tobacco has been aged over 8 years, yet retains intensity due to the abundant ligero in the mix. Complex and charismatic, SWAG Black brings it. SWAG S instead adds a San Andres Maduro wrapper and larger ring gauges to deliver a medium-full pepper shot in a way that traditional cigar brands don’t.
All the SWAGs are medium to full bodied, and all feature heaping doses of potent yet smooth, Dominican tobaccos for a spice and depth usually reserved for heavier, fuller Nicaraguan smokes. Credit Jochi Blanco of Tabacalera La Palma for sourcing the leaf and manufacturing these intense, peppery stogies.
