Swisher Cigars
Swisher traces its roots to 1861, when David Swisher took over a small cigar business to settle a debt in Newark, Ohio. David, who worked with his four sons, treated the smokes as just another item they could offer while traveling through the Midwest in their horse-drawn "rolling stores," selling cigars alongside goods to rural communities. Rolled by hand, the Ohio-based company was producing several hundred cigars per day by 1870.
The business took off quickly. Within 25 years, two of David's sons, Harry and John, bought the company and renamed it Swisher Brothers. By 1895, the company had expanded to three factories employing over 1,000 workers, producing over 300,000 handmade sticks a day. Harry eventually sold his half of the business to his brother John, who brought his son Carl into the operation. The company was renamed again as John Swisher & Son before eventually becoming the Swisher International Group we know today.
The game changed in 1924 when Swisher installed its first cigar-rolling machine, pioneering mass production and consistent output that revolutionized the industry. By the end of the decade, production had skyrocketed to 100 million cigars per year with far less labor required than the old handmade methods. In 1941, Swisher operated the largest cigar factory in the world, cementing its place as an industry giant. Swisher Sweets debuted in 1958 as the brand's flavored machine-made flagship, and it quickly became one of the most recognizable names in accessible, everyday smokes.
Today, Swisher remains a household name synonymous with convenience, consistency, and over 160 years of American cigar history. The brand offers machine-made cigars and cigarillos in a wide variety of flavors and formats, from classic tobacco taste to sweet, aromatic options. Swisher Sweets are sold in gas stations, convenience stores, and tobacco shops nationwide, making them one of the most accessible cigars in America. While they may not be handmade boutique smokes, Swisher built an empire on delivering reliable flavor and quality at a price point anyone can afford. From wagon stores in 1860s Ohio to global distribution in the 21st century, Swisher's story is one of American entrepreneurship, innovation, and staying power.
