2014 CA Report: 7 Big Ring Cigars of the Week

7 Big Ring Cigars You Need to Smoke

by Gary Korb

Big ring cigars are the “in” thing these days. Nick Perdomo (who has often been ahead of his time), was making carpet roll size cigars during the boom, like his Cuban Parejo “Galaxia,” a 10″ x 100 ring whopper. That was almost unheard of then, but with cigar sizes reaching widths of 70, 80, and even 90 today, they’ve become the “go-to” for a lot of cigar smokers. Do they want more for their money? Is it “cigar envy?” Whatever . . . with so many cigars online now available in extra large ring gauges, here are seven – one for every day of the week – that will give you the most pleasure for your buck.

Romeo y Julieta House of Capulet Magnum (6″ x 60)

I don’t like Mondays. There’s the email and phone messages, the staff meetings, plus all of the other first-day-of-the-week drudgery. You ask yourself, Is it quitting time, yet? No, it’s only 9:30 AM and you’re already aching for a great cigar. Take the mundane out of your Monday with this medium-bodied Romeo Capulet Magnum. The 6″ x 60 Magnum aptly represents Juliet Capulet. Everybody knows Shakespeare’s famous play, but did you know that Juliet had a big appetite? She was a zaftig young beauty, and who knew Romeo had a thing for BBW’s? With its long, blonde, aromatic Connecticut wrapper and smooth-smoking Honduran & Nicaraguan tobaccos, this voluptuous treat is the perfect way to turn a stormy Monday into a tranquil holiday.

NUb Connecticut 460 (4″ x 60)

Monday’s history. You’re beginning to find your groove, so Tuesday calls for something a little less ordinary like the NUb Connecticut 460. This stubby, 60-ring flavor-fest rolled in a flawless Ecuadorian Connecticut wrapper makes for a rich-tasting, aromatic cigar that wastes no time getting to “the sweet spot,” because the sweet spot is where it begins. It’s one of the best cigars if you’re the type of smoker who wants to get right to the good part (like fast-forwarding a porno flick to get to the hot stuff). Since these NUb Connecticut cigars are only four inches long, double your pleasure and make it a “two for Tuesday” smoke.

Romeo y Julieta Reserva Real Magnum (6″ x 60)

For “hump day,” the Romeo y Julieta Reserva Real Magnum is the most flavorful way to divide your week. Whether you buy cigars online or not, of all the Romeo selections, the Reserva Real’s rich-tasting Dominican-Nicaraguan core and aromatic Ecuadorian Connecticut wrappers have earned this blend an outstanding reputation among cigar smokers, not to mention plenty of well-deserved space in their cigar humidors. With Friday only 48 hours away, start celebrating early with this big boy that hits it out of the park with every rich, creamy, and complex puff.

La Gloria Cubana Serie R #6 (5 7/8″x 60)

This is the day you turn up the volume with a La Gloria Cubana Serie R #6. These full-bodied, big ring cigars are blended with spicy Nicaraguan ligero, plus some Dominican Olor, then rolled in a savory Ecuadorian Sumatra wrapper. Measuring 5 7/8th inches, would it have hurt to go the extra eighth of an inch and made it an even six? But I digress . . . Thursday’s the day you want to get as much off your plate as possible. So, forget that energy drink that only lasts 5 hours and light-up a Serie R #6. If you prefer, add coffee and seize the day! Just in case you happen to get lucky tonight, you can put all that extra stamina to good use.

Padrón 7000 Maduro (6 1/4″ x 60)

TGIF in spades! Everybody’s workin’ for the weekend, it’s payday, and you’re ready for happy hour with a Padrón 7000 Maduro. It’s going to be a long happy hour, too. For this extra-dark Nicaraguan puro, all that marvelous Padrón flavor and aroma has been packed into a 60 ring gauge, rolled then pressed to a little over six inches to create “the mother of all Padrón cigars.” The smoke is thick, creamy, robust, yet not overpowering, full-flavored, and naturally sweet. If you’ve already had the Padrón experience, you know what you’re in for. Now double it, add your favorite libation, and you’re ready to party like Will Ferrell in A Night at the Roxbury.

CAO Brazilia Gol! (5″ x 56)
CAO Brazilia Gol! (5" x 56)

Today is the day you get a little extra sleep, but there’s no escaping the “honey do” list. A CAO Brazilia Gol! will fix that. This potent puppy boasts hearty Nicaraguan long-fillers rolled in a dark, shimmering, and naturally sweet Brazilian Arapiraca wrapper. Compared to the other large ring cigars in this list the Gol! is a mere 56. But what it lacks in width it makes up in a smoke that’s so rich and complex, this dark, ebony angel of joy has become the bestselling cigar size in the CAO Brazilia stable. So, when you’ve finished cleaning the garage, mowing the lawn, washing the car, and exchanging the propane tank for tonight’s barbecue, go for the Gol! and hit the hammock.

Oliva Serie V Ligero Double Toro (6″ x 60)

This is the day of the week when you finally get to chill-out. It’s just you, the TV, a fridge full of beer, some snacks, and an Oliva Serie V Double Toro. This full-bodied buxom beauty from Oliva’s award-winning Serie V cigars line uses Nicaraguan Jalapa ligero long-fillers and one of the most gorgeous and flavorful Nicaraguan Habano Sun Grown wrappers you’ll ever put to your lips. Since this is a Double Toro you’ll enjoy twice the amount of ultra-smooth flavor, aroma and all of that much-needed relaxation. It’s also one of the best big ring cigars for helping you kick back and brush-off that queasy little feeling in your gut reminding you that tomorrow is Monday. So make sure Sunday’s your fun day, because tomorrow is only a day away.
