Cigar News: CAO Arcana Mortal Coil Cigar Returns As Annual Release

It’s always good news for a cigar maker when they get to re-release a cigar by popular demand. That’s what happened again this year with the CAO Arcana Mortal Coil. Named “Mortal Coil Toro,” the 6 1/8” x 50-ring limited-edition cigar was scheduled to ship to cigar retailers on August 1st. One of the cigar’s most attractive features, and possibly the main reason Mortal Coil has become a fan favorite, is its Andullo fermented filler tobacco.

“The fans of CAO spoke, and we listened,” said CAO Cigars senior brand manager, Ed Lahmann. “We previously brought back Mortal Coil, yet the fans kept wanting more. So with this year’s release of the blend, we’re showing the fans of CAO that we’re willing to go the extra mile for them.”

The Andullo tobacco used in the blend is the result of a time-honored cultivation and curing technique used for sun-grown Habano-seed tobaccos. It is also the oldest tobacco fermentation method used in the Dominican Republic. Rather than using traditional oval pilons for bulk fermentation, Andullo tobacco is tightly wrapped in palm tree pods known as yaguas that are compressed by coiling rope around the pod. This old-world process of fermentation takes approximately two years and the finished tobacco reveals a rough, leathery-looking leaf with a thicker texture and an earthy sweetness.

Handcrafted at STG Estelí, Nicaragua, the Dominican Andullo filler is joined by Honduran Jamastran, Nicaraguan Estelí, and Dominican Piloto Cubano fillers, a Connecticut Shade binder, and completed with a dark, oily, Connecticut Broadleaf wrapper. The cigar is medium-bodied issuing notes of molasses, dark chocolate, raisins, and spice accents with an alluring aroma.
