The Don Reynaldo by Warped Cigars Back Story
Released in December of 2014, the Don Reynaldo by Warped cigars line was created by Kyle Gellis as a tribute to his father who loved Cuban cigars.
“Growing up he taught me about cigars and the lifestyle that accompanied them,” said Kyle. “I wanted to thank and honor him for all the support he has given me and blend a cigar that combined the flavor profiles he loved.”
Rolled at El Titan de Bronze in Little Havana, Miami by El Titan de Bronze’s most gifted rollers, the flavor and character of the blend is reportedly a “hybrid” of Kyle’s father’s two favorite Cuban cigars. They are even rolled using Cuban techniques like entubado bunching and a traditional Cuban triple cap.
Although Don Reynaldo is a regular production line, according to the Warped Cigars website production is limited to 100 cigars per day.
Cigar Basics
This Don Reynaldo Regalos is beautifully rolled with what looks like a very toothy corojo wrapper. You can also pick up a fair amount of oiliness in the leaf. Plus, the triple seam cap is textbook all the way. Using a double blade cutter, the cap cut perfectly revealing a perfect draw. To my palate, the cold draw issued a combination of herbs and sweet tobacco.
Don Reynaldo by Warped Cigar Review
A peppery mix of black and red pepper gets this party started. The cigar burns evenly revealing a very granular dark grey ash. The peppery spice settles down and lingers mostly on the finish.
By the first inch the smoke is clearly medium-bodied issuing a mix of cedar and baking spices. The only sweet note I pick up is some faint caramel when my tongue happens to touch the top of the cap.
By the midpoint, little has changed. Still medium in body, but there are two more notable elements. For one, how creamy this cigar smokes. I also got some floral notes which are common in many Cuban cigars.
The smoke becomes a little more intense in the last two inches. Now more medium-full in body, some mineral-like notes come into view. By taking more time between puffs, I’m able to help maintain the core cedar, herbal, and baking spice base flavors. To my palate they continue to be the most dominant flavors as the underlying pepper prevails on the finish.
Is the Don Reynaldo by Warped Regalos Worth Buying?
I would say so, but like many cigars we review here, it’s not for everyone. This Don Reynaldo appears to be more of an acquired taste, like going from Lagers to IPAs. The cigar was well-balanced throughout, markedly flavorful, and maintained its medium-bodied composure.
As I said in the video, I’m not a fan of peppery cigars. However, after smoking two Regalos samples, the pepper was actually pretty modest. Although a lot of cigar smokers prefer larger ring gauges, numerous others prefer Petite Coronas and similar ring gauges to get more flavor from the wrapper. Moreover, some Dominican Corojo wrapper can be pretty spicy. Therefore, I’ll wager they’re going to love this cigar. Big props to Mr. Gellis, too, for producing an excellent performing cigar on all counts—even its Cubanesque elements. That alone makes it worth opening your wallet.
