The Villiger de Nicaragua Edición Limitada 2022 Cigars Back Story
Villiger Cigars founder, Heinrich Villiger, has been a major figure in the cigar industry for decades working mostly in the European market. As European cigar smokers have begun to embrace more cigars from Nicaragua, Heinrich had already seen how ripe the American cigar market was with its demand for Nicaraguan cigars. He also had great admiration for the quality of Nicaragua tobacco, which led to a close relationship with Joya de Nicaragua cigars founder Dr. Alejandro Martinez Cuenca and the Joya de Nicaragua factory team. So, with some help from Joya de Nicaragua, in 2020 Villiger Cigars began construction of its own Nicaraguan cigar factory.
In 2022, Fabrica Villiger De Nicaragua emerged, and the first cigar off the line was the revamped Villiger La Libertad. This year, Villiger’s newest blend, Villiger De Nicaragua Edición Limitada 2022 arrived—a year late due to supply chain issues—to the tune of only 10,000 cigars proudly bearing the new factory’s name.
Cigar Basics
The rolling and pressing are seamless with edges that are not too sharp. The wrapper color is even throughout and the blue color they chose for the bands pops nicely against the caramel-colored wrapper. The cold draw offered a mix of light salt, sweet tobacco and raisin. The opening puffs were creamy, a bit sweet, and quite mellow with notes of raisin and light spice.
Villiger de Nicaragua Edición Limitada 2022 Cigar Review
Following the overture, the body jumped right into medium territory with a more earthy flavor. By the half-inch mark, the smoke offers a creamy and chewy mouthfeel. Sweet tobacco notes become more apparent followed by a volley of nutmeg and mocha latte. Retrohales revealed nutmeg with a trace of white pepper.
Medium in body, the smoke was smooth, creamy, and balanced up to and into the midsection where the strength increased only slightly. More Nicaraguan earthiness crept-in joined by cinnamon spice. Nutmeg, almonds and cinnamon became the most dominant flavors with some occasional drive-by citrus.
In a continuation of the midsection, the last segment of the cigar remained medium in body. The baking spice notes were more dominant, while the cigar also revealed more earthiness. Occasionally, a cocoa or citrus note would join the fray.
Overall, the burn was textbook clean on both samples revealing firm grey ashes. The body and strength peaked at medium-plus in the final inch but the smoke never shed its creaminess.
Are Villiger de Nicaragua Edición Limitada 2022 Cigars Worth Buying?
Very much so. The Edición Limitada 2022 checked about every box for me. Villiger did a great job on this Torpedo, and although it wasn’t a puro, it had a pretty authentic Nicaraguan flavor profile. Its medium body and well-balanced flavors make it a natural for most cigar smokers. Plus, you could probably pair it with just about anything. I suggest a fine dark añejo rum. Suffice it to say… I hope the Villiger de Nicaragua Edición Limitada 2022 will become a beacon for cigar smokers who have yet to discover the excellent work Villiger has been doing.
