Cigar Advisor Review Panel: La Aurora Preferidos 1903 Emerald

Like Warped Corto, or RoMa Craft’s Guaimaro, La Aurora Emerald lives in the ‘IYKYK’ realm. We suspect part of the reason why is that its blend has evolved over time. Beginning with a Cameroon wrapper (not to be confused with La Aurora 1903 Cameroon), Emerald has undergone a couple of changes to its recipe. The Cameroon wrapper was replaced with a barrel-aged Ecuador Sun Grown, requiring further tweaks to blend’s diverse core of premium tobaccos. If you’re a little confused, don’t fret - some of us were too (coughjaredcough).

Presentation: Box of 18 cigars
Construction: Well-rolled, though it has a leathery, almost rustic appearance.
Pre-Light Flavor: Woody & salty.
Core Flavors: Herbal and floral with notes of pepper, earth, and wood.
Draw: Excellent.
Ash: Not too much flake; firm and well-defined.
Aroma: Sweet and warm.

“Emerald’s body goes from medium to full in a hurry, and pepper makes tracks across the tongue as the smoke lingers. A classic stick that delivers a solid, heady & steady profile of wood, spice, and earth, complemented by some herbal essences (think fennel). And if you like a full-bodied smoke that stays true to that combo from start to finish, you will love the Emerald.”

“Admittedly, my knee-jerk reaction was, ‘This is great for a Cameroon’ (I usually don’t care for them) only to be late to the party on the wrapper change. Though it’s a little light on sweetness to my palate, it still checks most of the boxes I look for in a cigar’s flavor array and it burns true with an old-world herbal vibe. I think Emerald is a solid sleeper.”

“Fuller than expected, the La Aurora Preferidos Emerald was an unexpected treat. Throughout the cigar lies a creamy undercurrent while, to my palate, red pepper, earth, bold coffee, and cedar take their turn leading the charge. Overall, a solid choice and a nice blend to have on hand for a sunny day.”

“While my impressions of Emerald didn’t hit the ground running as quickly as they had for my fellow Advisors, I wound up finding the profile interesting. There was this vegetal flavor to my first few puffs that almost reminded me of a rhubarb. A very consistent package that hones in on its flavors all throughout…I appreciated its full-bodied approach.”
