Paulie’s Quick Ash Cigar Review: Raices Cubanas Liga de Reyes

A Liga Their Own...

They’ve been a not-so-best-kept secret in the cigar industry. And while you may not recognize the name, you know the cigars they’ve made.

Founded in 2003 in Danlí, Honduras, Raices Cubanas made their bones by making exceptional cigars with consistent quality. The Endemaño family brought their Cuban tobacco heritage to Honduras, creating a factory that became the secret weapon behind many award-winning blends from Alec Bradley, Viaje, and Illusione. Not exactly slouches.

Like Plasencia before them, Raices Cubanas is stepping out from behind the curtain. They’ve put their name on a lineup of releases, including Clasico, C5 Black, GRD3, and Liga de Reyes, which I’ll be taking a closer look at.

Liga de Reyes represents the heart of this new chapter. This medium-bodied blend promises the character and experience you'd expect from master artisans finally signing their own work. Let's explore what makes this smoke worthy of some attention.

Behind the Blend

Factory: Fábrica de Tabacos Raíces Cubanas S. de R.L., Honduras
Size: 5” x 52 Robusto
Strength: Medium
Wrapper: Honduras
Binder: Honduras and Nicaragua
Filler: Honduras

Presentation: 21-count box

Liga de Reyes features a wrapper from Trojes. Now, Trojes isn’t a specific wrapper varietal, it’s a growing region on the Honduran side of the border with Nicaragua, across from Jalapa. This area generally produces earthier and slightly more refined tobacco than what you get from other parts of Honduras. You’ll recognize the Trojes leaf if you’ve smoked the Tempus or Prensado, two cigars that helped put Alec Bradley, the region, and the Raices Cubanas factory on the map.

The rest of the blend features a double binder from Honduras and Nicaragua and long fillers from Honduras. Construction is excellent, which is expected from this team. Each sample I smoked had a smooth draw, a straight burn line, and held its ash longer than expected.

The Last Word

Liga de Reyes feels intentional, not rushed. It isn’t flashy and doesn’t need to be. Instead, it offers a well-rounded Honduran profile that’s easy to enjoy whether you’re new to the brand or you’ve been enjoying Raices Cubanas-made cigars for years.

With a proven ability to create excellent cigars for other brands, Raices Cubanas Liga de Reyes shows they can also deliver quality under their own name. It might not immediately set off fireworks, but it’s a cigar that earns your respect over time.
