What’s the back story?

Asylum Lobotomy Corojo cigars are the sequel to 2016’s original Asylum Lobotomy cigars collection sold exclusively by Famous Smoke Shop. Medium to full in body, the blend is comprised of Nicaraguan authentic Corojo seed tobaccos for the binder and filler, while the piece de resistance is a flawless, reddish-hued, authentic Corojo seed Jamastran wrapper grown in Honduras. Like the original Lobotomy by Asylum cigars, the Corojo line was made in collaboration with Asylum Cigar Company founders, Tom Lazuka & Christian Eiroa, and will also be sold exclusively through Famous Smoke Shop.

“The original Lobotomy by Asylum is one of our tastiest and best selling private labels,” said Famous Smoke Shop Private Label Buyer, Michael Klingerman, who helped supervise the project. “During a conversation with Tom, we brought up the idea of combining this successful blend with Christian’s legendary Corojo wrapper to see what the taste would be. It only took a few tweaks to create a blend that combines the full-flavored medium strength of the original, but amps it up with the unique spicy, peppery, and earthy qualities of prime Corojo tobacco.”

#nowsmoking @famoussmokeshop: The Asylum Lobotomy Corojo Toro offers a rich, medium-bodied smoke that blooms into a creamy pastiche of cedar, sweet tobacco, and peppery spice.

“The reason we did the authentic Corojo wrapper is that the main tobacco we grow in Honduras represents Christian, his father Julio, and our company,” said Asylum Cigars’ Tom Lazuka. “We are able to do so much with this tobacco; from full-bodied to smooth, to earthy, and sweet. If I had to pick one tobacco to only smoke the rest of my life it would be our authentic Corojo from Honduras.”

Distinguished by red boxes and bands, the Lobotomy by Asylum Corojo collection is presented in boxes of 10 cigars, 5-packs, and singles, in the following three sizes:

How well is the cigar made?

The Lobotomy Corojo Toro is solidly constructed and well-packed throughout. The Corojo wrapper has a velvety appearance with an attractive rust color, and is free of blemishes. The cap is a nice triple-seamer that clipped-off perfectly when cut. When cut, the cigar offers an excellent draw with a nutty flavor and some sweetness.

How does the cigar smoke?

Starting with an earthy-peppery mix, the Toro smokes well, and oozes plenty of creamy smoke with a spicy finish. And when I say “creamy,” I’m talking, soft frozen custard creamy. During the first act, the body resides mostly in the medium zone, which also applies to the strength, and the finish continues to sustain a lingering spiciness. By the midsection, the cigar improved in sweetness, and I also picked-up a tangy, citrusy note in the mix.

The burn was also impressive, revealing a firm grey ash. Additionally, no burn issues arose, nor were any relights required. I also noticed that the cigar had a long burn time. (It took almost two hours to complete the video.)

For the third act, the strength pokes its head into the full zone, but never becomes oversaturated. In terms of its overall flavor profile, the cigar shows good, sweet-spicy consistency. The most notable change-up was the note of tangy citrus in the latter stage.

What are the cigar’s primary flavors?

Earth, peppery spice, roasted nuts, cedar, sweet tobacco, and citrus.

What drink can I pair with this cigar besides coffee?

For this cigar I went with Rabbit Hole Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey, which is very smooth and has a fair amount of sweetness and spice to it. Although the Rabbit Hole provided a decent amount of kick, it didn’t over-power the cigar. Moreover, the whiskey seemed to open-up more of the cigar’s spiciness.

Should I buy this cigar?

Whatever your level of experience, the Asylum Lobotomy Corojo Toro is well worth picking-up, especially at such an affordable price. (They could’ve easily sold this cigar for $10.) It’s also one of the best ways to discover the unique flavor of authentic Corojo seed tobacco. Suffice it to say, the Asylum Corojo Lobotomy Toro is a relaxing, well-rounded cigar you can light-up any time of day, and will satisfy lovers of both top Nicaraguan cigars and Hondurans.
