Todos Las Dias Thick Lonsdale “Mas Fuerte” Back Story

According to a 2018 press release, Dunbarton Tobacco & Trust founder, Steve Saka, said: “When originally blending the Todos Las Dias liga, there were two finished core blends comprised of the same tobaccos, but with different proportions.”

As production got underway, Steve chose the blend he felt worked best in the original formats for release and shelved the other blend recipe. When it came time to add the Thick Lonsdale to the line he inadvertently gave the production team the recipe for the stronger version—he even double-checked it. With that he authorized 200 boxes for production. It wasn’t until after the first cigars started coming off the line that Steve realized his error. Even so, the Thick Lonsdale was a bestseller.

Since they could not source enough tobacco to make the blend properly, in 2021 DT&T put the entire Todos Las Días line on “indefinite hiatus.” Now it’s back as a limited release. There was enough of the exact leaf they needed to roll a small batch of the “Thick Lonsdale” which happens to be Steve’s favorite size from the line. Additionally, it’s the only batch of Todos Las Días Thick Lonsdale “Mas Fuerte” available for 2023.

Cigar Basics

The Nicaraguan Sun Grown wrapper on the Todos Las Dias Thick Lonsdale Mas Fuerte is perfectly even in color with a milk chocolate-like hue. Yet when the light hits it right, that plush reddish color found on many Sun Grown wrappers appears. The cigar is very firmly rolled. I found no soft spots and it has nice feel in the hand. The cap was well done, too, with thicker seams and finished with a little pigtail at the top. (You can twist it off and use as your “cut” if you like.) The foot has a pleasant cedary aroma, but I got only a little aroma off the wrapper, itself. The draw was firm but good after twisting off the pigtail, but I opted to cut the rest of the cap anyway. The pre-light draw offered a nutty, cashew-like flavor. The cigar is also graced by a very upscale-looking, diamond-shaped band with silver embossed TLD letters at the neck and a second band at the foot of the cigar.

The initial puffs were very smooth and creamy with a long red chili pepper finish. The burn also got off to a nice even start. I would describe the aroma as a pleasant, “rich tobacco” fragrance.

By the first inch the burn and ash on both my samples was extraordinary. The flavors were mostly nutty and spicy for me with my video sample being much spicier. The smoke was very creamy and mostly medium in body and strength in the early going. Retrohales were also very smooth through the nose with a peppery finish but far from overpowering.

By the midpoint the smoke remained very creamy and balanced with a mostly nutty-woody taste. Notes of sweet tobacco and espresso entered the mix for a nice change-up. The strength was now more in the medium-plus arena. At this point I began to realize that this “mas fuerte” blend was gaining in strength incrementally. Nearing the last several inches there was definitely more strength, and body, while the peppery spice—now tucked more comfortably into the mix—and the long finish remained.

The last couple of inches offered a little more sweetness and a lot more strength. Flavor-wise, the cigar issued a well-balanced combo of nuts, oak, peppery spice, sweet tobacco, and espresso. Although this TLD Thick Lonsdale MF was certainly robust and vivid, I didn’t find it especially heavy on the palate or heady afterward.

Is the Todos Las Dias Thick Lonsdale “Mas Fuerte” Cigar Worth Buying?

I’m not a fan of peppery cigars but there are always exceptions; the TLD Thick Lonsdale Mas Fuerte is one of them. If that’s your thing, considering the per-cigar price per box, it’s definitely worth buying.

In terms of this Lonsdale being “mas fuerte,” it’ll get you there, but here’s the deal: it may be stronger than other TLD vitolas, but not by that much. The blend is so refined the strength becomes secondary. That goes for its peppery finish, too, which it zesty but not overly piquant. Even with that, the cigar is best suited for more experienced palates, in my opinion.

All-in-all, the Todos Las Dias Thick Lonsdale is a solid smoke for those who love hardy, rich-tasting Nicaraguan puros. Considering this cigar’s singular blend and very limited run, if you do the math the box of 10 is both reasonable and humidor-worthy.
