MY WEEKEND CIGAR: Oliva Serie V Cigar Review

By Gary Korb

A Tasty, Compact Beauty of a Smoke

If I had to compare the Oliva Serie V Double Robusto with a classic sports car, it would probably be something like a Porsche Carrera GT – wide in the beam, yet compact… and loaded.

My Oliva Serie V Double Robusto smoked at Leaf Cigar Bar & Restaurant in Easton, PA.

Country of Origin: Nicaragua
Size: 5″ x 54
Strength: Full
Wrapper: Nicaraguan Habano Sun Grown
Filler: Nicaraguan Jalapa Ligero
Binder: Nicaragua

My Experience: For this particular weekend cigar I selected the voluptuously-proportioned, 5″ x 54 Oliva Serie V Double Robusto, a dark Nicaraguan beauty that gets my mouth watering in anticipation of smoking it. I also chose to enjoy this puro at one of my favorite indoor watering holes, Leaf Cigar Bar & Restaurant. The glossy Nicaraguan Habano sun grown wrapper is flawless, even in color top-to-bottom, and conceals a well-balanced, straight ligero blend of Jalapa-grown long-fillers. Since Jalapa leaf is a bit sweeter and lighter in pepper and spice than ligero from Estelí, it makes the Serie V much more accessible, especially if you don’t want to be overpowered. That prevalent sweetness is sustained throughout the chewy smoke as it melds with notes of coffee bean and cedar, plus a mix of both light-peppery and sweet spices. To make it a complete “Nicaraguan experience,” I paired it with a glass of Flor de Caña Nicaraguan rum. Sure enough, the flavors came nicely into focus. It also goes well with cafecito, espresso, and other types of coffee.

Suffice it to say . . . If full-bodied, full-flavored cigars are your thing, the Oliva Serie V Double Robusto is a modern classic that puts the pedal to the metal in a stimulating, complex, and aromatic smoke. . .VROOOM!
