MY WEEKEND CIGAR: La Flor de Ynclan Cigar Review

By Gary Korb

A flower by any other name. . .would be easier to say, and spell, for that matter, but when it comes to getting the most out of a little down time, the Villiger La Flor de Ynclan Churchill offers a relaxing, medium-bodied smoke blooming with flavor to spare.

My Experience: There I was again on a Sunday afternoon, kicking-back on the front porch rocker with this recent release from Villiger Cigars – the Flor de Ynclan Churchill. Pronounced, “lah-flor-day-een-klahn,” (“The Flower of Ynclan”), I got it in a La Flor de Ynclan sampler this past summer. The folks at Villiger suggest that this cigar be paired with Zafra 21 Year-Aged Rum to bring out the citrus and cinnamon spice notes in the smoke. OK, I’m in.

A peppery start gave way to very Cuban-like floral notes that bloomed into a pleasantly creamy, woody and naturally sweet smoke. Well-balanced flavors of cedar and oak dominated as notes of citrus, leather, coffee, and sweet spice worked their way in – and yes, even some cinnamon came to dance. The Rum was an excellent suggestion, but I think this cigar would pair well with just about anything.

Suffice it to say . . . This La Flor De Ynclan is not only attractive, it’s impressively affordable, too. If you’re looking for a well-made cigar with an Ecuador Connecticut wrapper and a medium-medium+ body that delivers the goods on flavor, this La Flor de Ynclan Churchill cigar is it. Likewise, I won’t be surprised if it makes it into some of the end-of-year “Top-10 Best” lists.
