They're also one of the most popular cigars on social media...a day doesn't go by without someone tweeting a picture of their Liga FFP, commenting on their Undercrown or upvoting comments about LP Dirty Rats. While these are all special shapes and sizes of these hard-to-find or brick & mortar-only cigars (such as the LP Ratzilla and Feral Flying Pig), these Drew Estates are very consistent - and make up the company's flagship cigar line.
The Drew Estate Liga Privada - meaning "private blend" - has its roots in the summer of 2005, with the initial blending of the Liga 9. According to then-President Steve Saka, "the basic goal was to simply have the factory make -ME- a cigar I would like to smoke and would feel confident in handing out to my industry compadres." It was never intended to be a cigar that would be made available for sale - this was to be a Drew Estate cigar he could enjoy, and feel good about sharing cigars with friends and associates. It would take over 6 months and more than 50 blend variations before Saka was satisfied he had his daily smoke, a full yet smooth DE cigar that features a stalk-cut dark broadleaf Oscuro wrapper over a blend of tobaccos hailing from 7 different Nicaraguan farms.
But Steve, Jonathan Drew and the blending team now had a problem - because this was a personal recipe he intended to share (and share he did), everyone he shared his Liga Privada cigars with now wanted more - and to have it released to the public. That presented a challenge, as the LP9 is made with rare tobaccos and uses certain primings, then aged for a year - making it available in only very limited quantities.
In 2009 came the DE Liga Undercrown. As legend has it, the cigar rollers in Drew's factory were smoking the Liga Number 9's daily - so many, in fact, that they were leaving too few of these already-limited cigars to be exported for sale. The torcedors decided that if they couldn't smoke Liga 9s, they'd blend their own replacement. That cigar, the Liga Undercrown, uses many of the same tobaccos as the LP 9, but of different vintages and primings - as well as an Otapan Negro Ultimo Corte wrapper. This would be the rollers' daily smokes, straight from the factory floor - putting truth in the phrase, "have what the employees are having."
Liga Privada T-52 would follow, making a more powerful and robust companion smoke to the Liga No. 9. A rare test-lot crop of stalk cut tobacco was used in the blending process, which took over 2 years and seven tries before the DE team felt they got it right. The Liga T52 is stronger and spicier than the original LP, thanks to a complex mix of seven aged tobaccos - and is backed by Drew Estates "guarantee of flawless construction, flavor and character."
The Liga Privada Unico Serie is another iteration of Liga Privada cigars, and is like an Island of Misfit Toys - but for cigars. Drew Estate calls it "a home for the unique ones": different and distinct blends and vitolas, all limited in quantities due to limitations in tobacco availability, construction and costs. That means that the sticks that carry the Liga Unico cigar bands aren't in enough supply to be made into their own production line. The LP Unico cigars are extra special, indeed.
