It all began in the 1960s, when the folks at John Middleton discovered that although many tobacco lovers enjoyed the taste and aroma of pipe tobacco, they didn't always have the time to smoke a pipe. Enter Black and Mild cigars. Filled with tobacco normally grown and cured for use in traditional pipes, they were the first American company to develop the "pipe-tobacco cigar."
The company's history actually dates back to 1856 when it was just a single tobacco retail store in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Between 1856 and 1949, the Middleton family expanded their number of retail stores and started a national mail order business. Today, they have production facilities in Limerick and King of Prussia, Pennsylvania.
During the 1950s Middleton began manufacturing some of its pipe-tobacco products. Then, in 1958, John Middleton sold its retail operations and focused solely on expanding the manufacturing and marketing of pipe tobacco.
By the1960s, the business had moved to King of Prussia, Pennsylvania, and in 1968, the company debuted its first pipe-tobacco cigar made with Middleton's Cherry Blend, which at that time was the company's bestselling pipe tobacco.
Slip ahead two decades, and in 1980 Black & Mild cigars, the company's second pipe-tobacco cigars were introduced to the market. The cigars were made with Middleton's Black & Mild pipe tobacco, and by 1996 they became the number one selling cigar packs in the U.S.
In the mid-1990s, the company launched two additional pipe-tobacco cigars, Prince Albert's Soft & Sweet Vanilla and Prince Albert's Soft Cherry Vanilla. Near the end of the decade Middleton purchased a second factory in Limerick, Pennsylvania, and in 1998 Middleton gradually moved its making and packing facility to Limerick. Tobacco processing operations remained at the King of Prussia facility, where Black and Mild cigars are still made today.
Answering consumer demand for a milder blend, in 2001 Middleton added Black & Mild Mild cigars to their Black & Mild cigars stable. Three years later, they introduced Black & Mild Fast Break pipe-tobacco cigars. This line extension offered a shorter smoke to accommodate cigar smokers who wanted a quicker smoke. In 2005, Black & Mild Cream cigars were introduced, followed by Black & Mild FT and Black & Mild Wine in 2006 and 2007 respectively. Black & Mild Wood Tip cigars made their debut in 2009, which led to the introduction of Black & Mild Wine Wood Tip cigars. Responding to the growing popularity of flavored cigars, Black & Mild Apple cigars were added to the series.
Part of the Altria family of companies since 2007, Middleton continues to manufacture and market Black & Mild cigars at affordable prices.
