Romeo, Romeo, where from art thou Romeo?Founded in Cuba in 1875, Romeo y Julieta is an iconic cigar brand named for the leading characters in one of Shakespeare's most enduring plays. During its early years the brand acquired gold medals for excellence from exhibitions in Antwerp, Paris, and Brussels.
In 1903 the Romeo y Julieta cigars brand was purchased by the firm Rodriguez, Arguelles y Cia, headed by Jose Rodriguez, former head of Havana's famous Cabañas factory. Though the brand had already amassed numerous awards within the industry, it was not all that popular until Jose Rodriguez, who also had a knack for marketing, turned it into the world-famous brand for which it is recognized today. Rodriguez, eventually became the sole owner of the Romeo y Julieta Cigar Factory, and created employee incentives that actually increased the quantity of cigars the factory was producing.
Rodriguez was determined to spread the word of his cigars, and traveled all over the world promoting his Romeo y Julieta cigars. For example, he bought a racehorse and named her "Julieta." By entering her in races around the world, Rodriguez helped spread the brand name. He also opened a Romeo y Julieta cigar shop in the Hotel Capulet in Verona, Italy.
And it worked! The Romeo y Julieta brand became so popular, Rodriguez began making personalized bands for the brand's most affluent customers. At one point, the company was producing 2000 different personalized bands for prominent customers, including Sir Winston Churchill. Romeo y Julieta is credited for creating the "Churchill" shape, which at that time was called the "Julieta No.2."
Today Romeo y Julieta 1875 cigars are made in the Dominican Republic at Tabacalera De Garcia under the direction of Vice President & General Manager, Jose Seijas. A native of The Dominican Republic and the son of a local politician, Seijas has been blending some of the world's finest premium cigars for over 35 years. Although he studied industrial engineering in college, at age 24 Seijas began working at Tabacalera de García, analyzing tobacco crops instead of analyzing figures on a computer screen.
However, not unlike his Cuban predecessor, Jose Rodriquez, Seijas's engineering background played an important role in the early part of his career at Tabacalera de García by helping the factory control costs and improve the quality of the cigars. (is he still there? Maybe "played" should be "plays"?)
It's not surprising that his chosen career has been so rewarding. Having earned a reputation for choosing the best tobaccos and the consistency of flavor in his blends, Jose Seijas is not only responsible for the production of all Romeo y Julieta cigars, he is also the man behind such other prestigious Cuban heritage brands as H. Upmann, Trinidad, and Montecristo cigars.
