The story behind Swisher Sweets cigars is just as interesting as the cigars are famous. To settle a debt in 1861, a small cigar business was handed over to David Swisher, a wagon merchant from Newark, OH. Swisher, who worked with his four sons, treated the cigars as just another item they could offer while traveling through the Midwest in their horse-drawn "rolling stores."

The first Swisher cigars were rolled by hand, and by 1870 the Ohio-based company was producing several hundred cigars a day. Fast forward 18 years to 1888. Two of David Swisher's sons, Harry and John H. Swisher, bought the company and appropriately renamed it Swisher Brothers. By 1895 the company had expanded to three factories, employing over 1,000 workers, and consequently producing over 300,000 cigars a day.

In 1913, Harry Swisher sold his half of the business to his brother John, who then brought his son Carl into the business. The company was renamed again to John H. Swisher & Son. As the business continued to grow, Carl sought another location for the company, and decided on Jacksonville, FL.

Not only entrepreneurs, but also innovators, the Swishers purchased the first cigar rolling machines, capable of producing much more uniform cigars in both appearance and quality. Moreover, in 1924 John H. Swisher & Son was the first company to wrap finished cigars in cellophane sleeves, and even invented a means for easily removing the cellophane by pulling on the cigar band.

By 1930, the Great Depression hit the country hard and millions of Americans were unemployed. But while other companies were laying people off, Swisher was hiring. Then in 1939 the Swishers created what is known today as "day care," by building the country's first children's nursery on the top floor of their Jacksonville headquarters. Named for the company's flagship cigar brand, The King Edward Nursery employed a staff of professional nurses and assistants who worked around the clock. A year later, King Edward became the world's bestselling cigars, and by 1941 the Swishers owned the world's largest single cigar factory.

Swisher Sweets cigars were introduced in 1958 and its success grew to worldwide proportions. The brand's lines included Swisher Sweets Little Cigars, Swisher Sweets Cigarillos, Tip Cigarillos, Sweet Coronellas, Wood Tips, Slims, Perfecto, Blunt, and Kings. By 1964 the company was producing over 4 million cigars a day.

It wasn't until the mid-1980's that Swisher Sweets Little Cigars began appearing in cigar stores across the U.S., as well as 60 other countries. In yet another lucrative business decision made in 1986, Swisher acquired the Helme Tobacco Company, makers of smokeless tobacco.

Finally, in 1992 the company's name was changed to Swisher International, Inc., and today Swisher Sweets cigars can also be found in a variety of flavors, including peach, menthol, strawberry, chocolate, cherry, grape, white grape, wine, and regular.
