Fan Mail: Even More of Your Burning Cigar Questions, Answered (Part 42)

If there’s one thing that’s universally true of cigar smokers, it’s that we have lots of cigar questions. Some are easy to answer. Others have layers. Each month we rise to the challenge and choose three subscriber questions to answer in video format. It’s a continuing labor of love with one mission: to make your smoking journey as easy as possible. And let’s be honest…you probably want to smoke your cigars and relax, not sit around researching them. That’s our job!

This month, Gary leads us off with the differences between a 50/50 propylene glycol (PG solution) and distilled water when you need to refill your humidifier; John had a rare experience with a cigar that was burning funny, and Jared’s got another cigar humidification lifehack that could be a game changer.

Cigar Question #1: How to fill a humidor humidifier? PG Solution vs. Distilled Water

If there’s one thing that cigar smokers are most concerned about is keeping their precious cigars in the freshest condition possible. A big part of that is maintaining a consistent temperature and relative humidity in your humidor. If you use a humidifier, you may find yourself asking the same question Terry in Ft. Worth, Texas: Is it better to use distilled water or PG solution solution when it’s time to fill the humidifier? Watch what Gary suggests. You may be surprised at the answer.

Cigar Question #2: Why is there a hole burning through the SIDE of my cigar?

This happened to Anthony from New Jersey – and needless to say, he was a little surprised. Because he’s smoking and relaxing and out of nowhere, there’s this tiny hole forming on the side of his cigar. Weird, right? It’s called a mouse hole burn, and it’s a burn issue on the order of canoeing or tunneling. But while you can’t prevent a mouse hole burn, you can deal with it pretty easily, since your cigar should recover a straight burn on its own. Watch John’s video to see how to spot this defect if it happens to you, and why it occurs.

Cigar Question #3: How many Boveda packets should I use in my humidor?

This month, I got a comment from Ron Lowe on my Essential Guide to Boveda Humidification Packs. He asked, “I have a New Air CC-100, what type of Boveda packets should I use for this type of humidor? I have about a hundred cigars stored inside my humidor at this time.” In my response, I’m going to talk about why you should stop humidifying cigars and start humidifying the space they occupy, especially if you’re using Boveda products.
