My Weekend Cigar Review: Joya de Nicaragua Cinco de Cinco

A Joy of a Drive at 55

It all began in 2013 with the release of the Joya de Nicaragua Cuatro Cinco for the company’s 45th anniversary. The Cinco Decadas followed in 2018 for JDN’s 50th anniversary, and for their 55th anniversary, the Joya de Nicaragua Cinco de Cinco line debuted at both PCA and InterTabac in 2023. On the back of the cigar bands are the words, Obras Maestras, which means “masterpieces” in Spanish, and it appears on only a few Joya de Nicaragua cigars.

The Cinco de Cinco blend was inspired by the hundreds of blending recipes created during private blending sessions with both consumers and others.

“This cigar was made with the people, by the people and for the people,” said Joya de Nicaragua executive VP, Juan Ignacio Martínez. Starting with a velvety, “ultra-vintage” Mexican San Andrés wrapper, the binder and filler consist of Nicaraguan tobaccos with at least five years of aging on them.

The Joya de Nicaragua Cinco de Cinco line is offered in three popular sizes: Robusto Gordo, Toro, and Corona Extra, and presented in boxes of 10 cigars.

Joya de Nicaragua Cinco de Cinco Cigar Review

With its uniform chocolate brown color, the Cinco de Cinco Corona Extra looked like a thin, chocolate candy bar with a pigtail cap. The softer box pressing was just right and the cigar felt firm throughout.

I peeled off the pigtail cap leaving a nice little hole with a good draw. However, I decided to use a cutter to open it further and get a little bit more surface area, which offered a pre-light flavor of sweet tobacco.

The cigar lit perfectly and the first couple of draws had that same sweet tobacco flavor, complemented by a flowery aroma. By the first half inch the cigar was very smooth, settling in with baking spices and a molasses-like sweetness. As it burned past the first inch, it revealed a nutty layer and the occasional hint of bittersweet chocolate. The smoke rounded out with excellent balance at medium body and strength not long after.

By the halfway point, the smoke was richer, deeper and more peppery. Then, as the burn began to sear its way into the last third, the body increased to full while the strength remained at medium. The sweet and nutty layers were eventually obscured by earthy, peppery, and charred wood flavors. Allowing the cigar to settle down and not get too hot also permitted some of the sweetness to return. Finally, with two inches left, the cigar appeared to have exhausted itself, so I left it there with a very satisfied smile.

Was Joya de Nicaragua Cinco de Cinco Weekend Worthy?

Let’s start with this: if you notice aesthetics as I do, the Joya de Nicaragua Cinco de Cinco is a handsome cigar with a perfect pigtail at its head, and whose dark chocolate color is complemented nicely by its forest green and beige colored band. I also happen to like the Corona Extra size a lot. I’m convinced there's something uniquely flavorful about 6¼” x 46 and similar dimensions, and this Joya did not disappoint.

At its core, the Cinco de Cinco offered a sweet, spicy, and nutty flavor profile, which is one that I like. As a result, not far into the first couple of inches, I was already so relaxed I almost forgot that I was reviewing it.

I’m a huge fan of the Joya de Nicaragua Cuatro Cinco; that cigar and the Cinco de Cinco have their differences, but they are pretty equal in enjoyment for me. I think the 55 is slightly earthier, but for a luxury-class cigar it’s very approachable and well worth a shot.
