The Romeo y Julieta Eternal Cigars Back Story
The Romeo y Julieta Eternal is a limited edition production cigar that celebrates the iconic brand’s 145 year “passion for cigars.”
The 6”x54 vitola is blended and handcrafted by the Plasencia family in collaboration with Tabacalera USA’s Head of Product Development, Rafael Nodal. All the tobaccos are sourced from Plasencia’s private Nicaraguan leaf reserves, and the wrapper is a double fermented leaf aged for 26 months.
Eternal is presented in boxes of 11 cigars. The 11th cigar (smoked in the video) differs from the rest, in that, it has a mostly gold band and a golden ring below which Nodal says, “symbolizes the strong bond between aficionados and Romeo y Julieta and the everlasting love of the iconic star-crossed lovers. It is a love that has proven to be eternal.”
The Basics At-a-Glance
Construction: The wrapper is beautiful and seamlessly rolled with a brick red patina. There are some little bumps, but no soft spots or vein trails. The rolling is literally seamless and the triple seam cap is perfectly applied. I also like the red silk band at the foot which gives it an extra shot of elegance.
Cold Draw: Excellent with a raisiny flavor.
Base flavors: Molasses, light earth, nutmeg, raisin, citrus tang, roasted nuts, charred oak.
Aroma: Aroma off the wrapper was grassy and sweet, while the smoke was primarily sweet.
Burn & Ash: Textbook.
Surprisingly, the opening puffs were not spicy for an all-Nicaraguan blend. The first puffs came off more as herbal, nutty, and toasty, then quickly transitioned to a more chewy smoke with a molasses-like sweetness. Mostly medium in body the smoke left a fairly dry finish on my palate.
The burn was even out of the gate, and at about 1-inch some earthiness crept in followed by more flavors. By the end of this act I was getting a well-balanced mix of molasses, earth, nutmeg, raisin, lemony tang, and a savory-sweet aroma.
This act was the most sensational. Talk about your “sweet spot,” the smoke was smooth and creamy, the flavors very well defined, and the molasses became more dominant as the earthiness faded. Moving along, a mix of fruit and nuts entered turning my Eternal into a “trail mix cigar.” The body and strength remained mostly medium.
In this section, the molasses settled down while the body and strength leaned into the full zone. What remained was more tanginess and a little less sweetness. However, the smoke was still smooth and creamy, the aroma sweet, and the burn—textbook. At just under three inches from the shoulders earth returned along with a note of charred oak.
What whiskey pairs well with the Romeo y Julieta Eternal Cigar?
The Romeo y Julieta Eternal is tailor-made for a long-aged single malt or bourbon. Coffee drinkers might want to go for cappuccino. But for more combinations, see our Cigar & Spirit pairing guide.
Is the Romeo y Julieta Eternal cigar worth smoking?
Absolutely. I’m filing the Romeo y Julieta Eternal under “Perfect Cigar.” It pushed all the right buttons for me. The cigar never wandered too far into full body. The smoke output was generous, chewy and packed with a stimulating mix of flavors—even the aroma was stimulating.
So, what you have in the Romeo y Julieta Eternal is a dazzling composition orchestrated with a harmonious medley of extraordinary tobaccos. (Is that musical enough for you?) You’ll also find Plasencia’s finest in the Romeo 505, Montecristo Espada Estoque, and their own Alma Fuerte cigars. Keeping those examples in mind, Nestor and Rafael totally nailed it for the Eternal. Plus, I can easily recommend this cigar to any avid cigar smoker for its body, complexity, and flavor profile. It’s an elegant cigar that begs you to savor it slowly with few if any distractions. Moreover, it’s beyond sublime and I’m adding it to my personal best cigars of the year list.
