CA Report: Top New Cigars (March 4, 2024)

The latest cigars from Asylum, Aganorsa and more…reviewed!

Homer said it best. “Lousy Smarch weather.” March never knows what it wants to be. Half winter and half spring, it’s the most indecisive of months. But…the silver lining here is that half spring part. At least warmer weather is on the way! To celebrate, I found three new cigars to enjoy in our newfound sunshine. Check out these picks from Asylum, Aganorsa Leaf, and a special milestone anniversary blend from Flores y Rodriguez.

As always, if there’s a fresh stick you think we should be smoking, drop us a hint in the comments below!

Asylum 867

Wrapper: Honduras (sweetened cap)
Binder: Honduras
Filler: Honduras

The folks behind Drew Estate’s Deadwood series have teamed up with Asylum’s Tom Lazuka and Christian Eiroa to take a crack at a sweet-capped cigar that bulges at the seams. Available in sizes up to 7” x 70, Asylum 867’s all-Honduran blend balances power and sweetness thanks to an approachable and aromatic smoke. Expect flavors of sweet wood, cashews, caramel, and a sugary sweetness on your lips after every puff. And don’t let the naysayers tell you that a sweet tip makes it any less of a cigar. If your taste buds are happy, it’s all that matters!

New Cuba Superior Connecticut

Wrapper: Ecuador Connecticut
Binder: Nicaragua
Filler: Nicaragua

Some days, you want a great cigar. On others, the flavor isn’t as important as the ritual. If you’re just looking for something that burns—and maybe a little more—New Cuba Superior Connecticut by Aganorsa Leaf is worth a puff. Aganorsa calls Superior an “elevated version” of their longstanding budget line; we’re not here to argue. Expect a mild-to-medium bodied excursion of easygoing flavors that you’d expect…like cedar, toast, and salted butter, but without the bitterness that comes with many el cheapo sticks. It’s the best of both worlds.

Flores y Rodriguez 18th Anniversary

Wrapper: Ecuador Sumatra Maduro
Binder: Dominican Republic Olor
Filler: Dominican Republic Piloto Cubano & Nicaragua Jalapa

Tip your hat to Abe Flores and the rest of the team at Flores y Rodriguez for passing 18 years in the industry. Back when I turned 18, I was old enough to (and did) enjoy my first cigar. Things have changed since then, but no matter, we’re happy to ferry Abe and company into their business adulthood! To celebrate, Abe blended a cigar using some of the finest tobaccos available—including seven-year-aged Piloto Cubano leaves—and the results were…delicious! Flavors of coffee, cocoa, smooth spices, and warm peppers await. Join us in helping them commemorate the occasion.
