Espinosa Murciélago cigars (Spanish for “bat” – the kind that fly), represent the triumphant saga of a full-flavored Espinosa cult classic. Originally launched in 2009, Murcielago was created by Erik Espinosa and former United Tobacco partner, Eddie Ortega. At that time, the cigars were made by Don “Pepin” Garcia; but when United Tobacco broke up, Erik kept the rights to the Murcielago brand, but the blend stayed with the Garcias and the brand went silent.
Fast-forward to 2015 when the next Murciélago iteration became a collaboration between Erik and master blender Amilcar Perez Castro. Made at Erik’s La Zona factory, they successfully recreated the blend’s flavor profile by keeping the San Andrés Negra wrapper and using a Nicaraguan core.
Calling it a “smart and clean design to usher in a new era,” production moved again in 2017 to AJ Fernandez’s San Lotano factory in Ocotal Nicaragua. This updated Murcielago was released in three sizes using the Mexican San Andrés Negra capa over a more refined blend of meticulously aged Nicaraguan tobaccos.
“AJ has been making blends for some classic lines and we thought it was a perfect opportunity to get Murciélago just right,” said Espinosa’s Director of Operations, Hector Alfonso Sr.
Packaged in boite nature boxes and six box-pressed sizes, Murciélago’s medium-full flavor profile offers a deep and rich smoking experience that spans a range of earth, pepper, cocoa, coffee, and sweet spice notes. Priced reasonably, Murciélago is perfect for cigar smokers who appreciate bold, well-balanced smokes. They don’t have to only come out at night either. Murcielago is great any time of day.
