These cigars are a family affair for A.J. Fernandez, a third-generation tobacco man who was raised in San Luis, Cuba. It was his grandfather, Andres, that developed the original recipe; production of the original cigar line ended right around 1959, a victim of the Cuban Revolution.
A.J. revived the blend and released his first of the new San Lotano cigars in 2010, rolled in his Tabacalera Fernandez factory located in Estelí, Nicaragua where he works day-to-day. AJ considers the quality of his raw materials the secret to his cigars - the filler tobaccos are grown from seeds exclusive to the Fernandez family. Coupled with the traditional Cuban cigar production method passed down to him from his grandfather and his father Ismael, his family connections are really what played the biggest role in once again releasing San Lotano brand cigars.
The blends are rich, and crafted according to the original recipes - and since the reintroduction of the original, has been expanded to include Connecticut, Habano and Maduro selections, all medium to full bodied. San Lotano the Bull sports an Ecuadorian Sumatra wrapper, and is encased in cedar for further marrying the flavors. But it's the San Lotano Oval that is the most popular of AJ Fernandez cigars: a uniquely oval-shaped cigar, it smokes cool and complex while sitting in the hand almost perfectly.
