Romeo y Julieta Cigars
Romeo y Julieta has stood as one of Cuba's most storied names, celebrating rich taste, exceptional quality, and approachable pricing that's built a loyal following across generations. The Dominican line expertly preserves that Cuban heritage with choice, cedar-aged Dominican long-fillers flawlessly rolled in silky Indonesian TBN shade-grown wrappers. The smoke unfolds smooth and creamy with medium body, balanced structure, and a note of sweet spice on the finish. Whether you're reaching for a daily smoke or celebrating a special occasion, Romeo y Julieta delivers consistency that's earned an impressive sales record spanning decades.
The brand's history runs deep. Founded in Havana in 1875, Romeo y Julieta Cuban cigars took their name from Shakespeare's legendary play, and during the early years, the brand acquired numerous gold medals for outstanding tobaccos at exhibitions across Europe in Antwerp, Paris, and Brussels. In 1903, the brand was purchased by Rodriguez, Argüelles y Cia, headed by Jose Rodriguez, the former manager of Havana's famous Cabanas factory. Though Romeo y Julieta had already amassed industry recognition, it wasn't until Rodriguez took the helm that it exploded into a world-famous brand. Rodriguez had a natural knack for marketing and traveled the globe promoting his cigars. In one clever move, he bought a racehorse named Julieta and entered her in races worldwide to spread brand awareness. In another brilliant stroke, he opened a Romeo y Julieta shop in the Hotel Capulet in Verona, Italy, Shakespeare's setting for the play.
Rodriguez's efforts paid off spectacularly. Romeo y Julieta became one of the most popular Cuban cigars for sale, so popular that he began producing personalized bands for the brand's most affluent customers. At one point, the company was producing over 2,000 different personalized bands. In 1946, Rodriguez met one of his most distinguished clients, Sir Winston Churchill, and Rodriguez is credited with creating the Julieta No. 2, the shape we know today as the Churchill.
After the Cuban embargo, production moved to the Dominican Republic at Tabacalera De Garcia under the direction of Vice President and General Manager Jose Seijas. Born in the Dominican Republic in 1950, Seijas has worked at Tabacalera de Garcia since he was 24, beginning his career analyzing tobacco crops and eventually becoming responsible for blending some of the world's finest premium Dominican cigars, including the Dominican-made H. Upmann, Trinidad, and Montecristo lines.
Today's Romeo y Julieta lineup showcases Seijas's expertise across multiple blends. The classic 1875 line remains the cornerstone, rolled in La Romana and aged in aromatic cedar sleeves with a signature white ash and refined flavor profile. Romeo Reserva Real steps up with prime Dominican long-fillers spiked with Nicaraguan ligero under an Ecuadorian Connecticut wrapper, bringing cocoa, leather, caramel, and wood to a medium-bodied smoke that's become one of the most universally loved Romeo cigars. The Reserva Real Nicaragua edition swaps in all-Nicaraguan fillers for a richer, earthier take on the same elegant construction.
In 2012, an entirely different kind of Romeo surfaced: ROMEO by Romeo y Julieta. Using a specially selected dark Ecuadorian Habano wrapper over a potent Dominican tobacco core, the ROMEO Piramide earned the number three slot in Cigar Aficionado's Top 25 Cigars of the year, with reviewers noting it as perhaps the strongest, most complex Romeo y Julieta to come out of the Dominican Republic. The Havoc series also debuted in 2012, delivering another full-bodied line blended with hearty, two-to-three-year-aged Nicaraguan and Honduran tobaccos in wide ring sizes of 56, 58, and 60.
For quick satisfaction, Romeo Eternal lights up medium-full with molasses, charred oak, and raisin from box-pressed Nicaraguan puros crafted under Rafael Nodal's guidance at Plasencia. Mini Cigarillos and Tins offer fast, convenient smoke in classic or flavored options for on-the-go enjoyment. Whatever the occasion, Romeo y Julieta proves you don't need a trophy cigar to enjoy rich, balanced smoke every single time.
