Tatuaje Cigars
Pete Johnson launched Tatuaje in 2003, effectively igniting the modern boutique cigar movement and proving that small-batch blends crafted by passionate blenders could rival the industry's biggest names. With a name that means "tattoo" in Spanish, the brand brought a gritty, rock-and-roll aesthetic to premium tobacco, combining bold Nicaraguan character with an edgy, countercultural vibe that resonated with smokers tired of the same old marketing.
From day one, Tatuaje cigars have been rolled at the My Father factory in Estelí under the watchful eye of Jose "Pepin" Garcia and his son Jaime. Pete Johnson was Pepin's first client, and that working relationship has lasted over 20 years, celebrated with the La Union collaboration that honors two decades of friendship. The 2024 La Union release features four different blends, two blended by the Garcia family for Tatuaje and two blended by Pete for My Father, all using rare pelo de oro tobacco grown on Garcia land.
The Tatuaje lineup spans medium to full-bodied profiles with numerous 90-plus rated blends. Reserva brings Ecuadorian Habano wrapper over Nicaraguan fillers for bold, spicy smoke. Miami delivers Cuban-style construction with Connecticut Broadleaf maduro for rich, earthy complexity. Fausto ups the intensity with sun-grown Habano Oscuro wrapper over potent Nicaraguan core. El Triunfador offers a smoother, more refined take with Ecuadorian Connecticut wrapper. Tattoo balances approachability with character, perfect for daily rotation.
The Black Label series showcases limited-edition releases with premium tobaccos and unique vitolas. Havana VI captures classic Cuban styling with Nicaraguan puros. The Monster Series drops annually with themed packaging and limited production. Cabaiguan delivers medium-bodied elegance with smooth Ecuadorian Connecticut Shade. L'Atelier pushes into even more complex territory with carefully aged Nicaraguan tobacco.
Tatuaje built its reputation on authenticity, quality, and refusing to compromise for mass-market appeal. These cigars are rolled by the Garcia family using the finest Nicaraguan tobaccos money can buy, delivering bold flavor and impeccable construction that defines what boutique tobacco should be. Whether you reach for a daily smoke or a limited release, Tatuaje delivers.
