Where it’s at: There’s nothing like kicking back with a great-tasting cigar on a beautiful beach. A gentle ocean breeze, waves lapping the shoreline as the flavors of your cigar lap your palate. You get the idea. Now imagine smoking a cigar in a place like Playa Siboney (Siboney Beach), one of Cuba’s most beautiful beach resorts.

That’s the little fantasy I conjured-up while smoking this Siboney Reserve Lonsdale, which is made exclusively for Famous Smoke Shop. Moreover, Siboney may also represent the Ciboney people, one of the tribes of the Taino nation which inhabited the Caribbean islands, including Cuba.

I rarely smoke Lonsdales, but proportionally, the 6-inch by 44-ring Lonsdale is one of the best cigar shapes—and after smoking this one, I’ve been re-thinking the sizes I usually smoke.

To start, the cold draw was leathery and a little sweet. Once lit, the smoke was dense, creamy, and peppery, underscored by subtle woody sweetness. The pepper faded shortly after and segued to a spicier profile with notes of cedar, leather and sweet tobacco on a long finish. As this chewy cigar rolled along through the first act, the base notes settled-in; primarily, cedar, spice, leather, sweet tobacco, and an occasional flash of light pepper.

As the cigar reached its midpoint, the sweetness increased, balanced by well-defined flavors of wood and spice. The smoke continued to be very creamy, decidedly aromatic, and from that point on it was pure nirvana; even the retrohale was creamy as a note of cedar slid through.

Suffice it to say. . . the more I smoked the Siboney Reserve Lonsdale, the better it got. (I can only say that about very few cigars.) Medium to full in body, it was exceptionally smooth and creamy with sweet spice and everything nice – even through the final inches. At this point I wished I really had been smoking this cigar on the beach. Well, summer’s just around the corner. . .
