CA Report: Top New Cigars (Nov 11 2019)

Reading Time: 4 minutes

A special tip of the Advisor cap to our veterans today – thank you for your service.

With the impending Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays, the stresses of the season are often compounded by the fact that it’s colder and more difficult to enjoy a cigar outside. For this early November rendition of TNC, we’re donning our sweaters and braving the chilly air in search of new cigars to warm you up like a smooth glass of Tennessee whisky.

Amidst your preparations for the stampede of family and friends that will be dipping into your collection, we’ve zeroed in on two popular mainstays: La Aurora and Nat Sherman (including the heavily anticipated Timeless Panamericana). Join me as I give you a brief overview of each.

La Aurora 115th Anniversary

Wrapper: Ecuador Habano
Binder: Dominican Republic
Filler: Brazil and Dominican Republic

Your sputtering mower barely made it back into the shed for the last cut of the year. Time to put the yard gars away and pick up something worth your while to smoke outside before the single digits hit. Have a look at this La Aurora 115th Anniversary. Melded with a contemporary flavor profile and old-world quality, these smokes foster full-flavored notes of earth, baking spices, nuts, and coffee bean. It’s a humi-worthy cigar that exemplifies one of the oldest brands in the business. And…it comes with a fair enough price that you can get that klunker repaired in time for spring.

La Aurora 107 Zeppelin (New Size)

Wrapper: Ecuador Sun Grown
Binder: Dominican Republic
Filler: Nicaragua and Dominican Republic

If the super-premium price tag of the Liga Privada No. 9 Flying Pig is a bit too rich for your blood, the new La Aurora 107 Zeppelin vitola will give you your short Figurado jollies for a whole lot less. The cigar features a splash of nutmeg, caramel, cedar, and a bit of spicy sweetness on the finish. Its short format is great for this time of year when the wind begins to bite, so put those savings to good use in preparation of the winter onslaught.

Nat Sherman Epoca Reserva

Wrapper: Dominican Corojo
Binder: Dominican Republic
Filler: Nicaragua and Dominican Republic

If you are a fan of Nat Sherman 1930, you’re going to love Epoca Reserva. That’s probably because it’s the same cigar! In reality, all that’s going on here is a rebranding, so the recipe and flavors remain the same – so rather than give it that “new look, same great taste” sticker that plagued the grocery aisles in the 90s. If you’ve never had it, the cigar is medium in body and zesty with cedary, Corojo sweetness, and smokes smooth with a slightly spicy, but mostly mellow finish. The proof is in the cigar, though, so try one out and experience it yourself!

Nat Sherman Timeless Panamericana

Wrapper: Ecuador Sumatra
Binder: Nicaragua
Filler: Nicaragua and Costa Rica

The search for rare cigars just became a little easier with the addition of Nat Sherman Timeless Panamericana to Famous Smoke Shop’s humidor. Initially only found in Nat Sherman’s Manhattan-based Townhouse retail store, it’s finally available for everyone’s enjoyment. A three-country medley of tobaccos imbues an essence of nuts, coffee, cocoa, and even a splash of cherry. Why not make your last hoorah at outdoor smoking this year one to remember?

Nat Sherman Epoca 2019 Limited Edition

Wrapper: Nicaragua
Binder: Nicaragua
Filler: Nicaragua

There’s still plenty of time to pick up some first-class smokes before the big feast, so maybe you can go all-in on a small batch Nat Sherman. The Epoca Limited Edition 2019 is made by Plasencia in Nicaragua and divvies up bold spices, woody earth, pepper, and a savory finish. And that’s good news, because the point of a great cigar is smoking it, not sitting on it for the sake of owning a unicorn, right? Looks like Nat Sherman knows that for 2019, it’s better to save the best for last.

Nat Sherman Timeless 2019 Limited Edition

Wrapper: Dominican Shade Grown Colorado Oscuro
Binder: Dominican Republic
Filler: Dominican Republic

What’s that? An all Nicaraguan blend isn’t your cup of tea? Nat Sherman has one last newbie up their sleeve to toss into the limited-edition category this year: the Nat Sherman Timeless Limited Edition 2019. With a Dominican blend underneath an Oscuro wrapper, the smoke is smoother and offers notes of dark cocoa, gentler spices, and a light peppery finish. All of this comes in an easy-smoking, medium-bodied package that nearly any palate can get behind.
