Zino Davidoff, who was undoubtedly "a man of the world," understood the pleasures of enjoying the moment. Originally from Kiev, in 1911, Henri Davidoff and his family fled Russia due to political upheavals and anti-Jewish pogroms. After arriving in Switzerland, within three months, Henri Davidoff opened a tobacco shop in Geneva. That is where his son, Zino, learned the tobacco business. Trips to Central and South America increased his knowledge, and by the late 1930's the little Davidoff store in Geneva became the world's premier shop for fine, hand-rolled Cuban cigars. Moreover, Zino Davidoff is credited with creating the cigar humidor as we know it today, as well as the double-bladed guillotine cigar cutter. In 1968, Cuba offered Zino a production line in his own name and introduced the popular "White Label" Davidoff brand.

Some 20 years later, due to disputes over the quality of the cigars and ownership rights of the brand, the marriage with Cuba didn't last. Always the perfectionist, in August of 1989, Zino burned over one hundred thousand (100,000!) of his cigars, after deeming them too low in quality, and therefore, unfit to sell. An agreement was also drawn-up stating that Cuban-made Davidoff cigars would no longer be sold in Davidoff shops - even in Europe. Following the break-up, production of all Davidoff cigars moved to The Dominican Republic in 1991 where they've been made exclusively under the direction of Master Blender, Hendrik Kelner.

Although Zino sold his company to the Max Oettinger Company in 1970, he remained the brand's ambassador until his passing in 1994 at 87 years of age.
